Thanks to all, especially Elmer. My best guess is that I should not plug my I phone into the cigarette lighter to charge before I start the car. That seems to be the culprit.

Was quoted $500 installation at reputable local Corvette shop. Sounds like 4 to 5 hours of labor. Would only have guys who know these cars do the work.
