I had the same problem.... Tried all of the easy fixes mentioned here (thanks for all the suggestions). Ended up taking it to the dealer and the latch mechanisim had to be replaced. $250 dealership...

I doubt that they can be polished out, pretty deep scratches in the fiberglass. I'll try doing it myself once the weather clears and I've got a good day to work on it.

I am of the same opinion... Around 6k on mine and plan to change it out next Saturday. Oil Life Monitor says 43%. It's my daily driver, 60 miles round trip 5 days per week and then weekend play...
