Piston is probably at the bottom I would look with a small flash light and turn it slowly over by hand as soon as the piston starts up you will see that little tube flop into view.:smash:

I removed my radiator in my 71 454 with a/c........I got it out without removing the shroud. Not easy but duable. I tied the shroud back up against the engine.......the fan blade was removed.

Taking off the pan would have been the best for sure. You could fish the pan bottom if one bends the rod the magnet is attached to, and fish through the drain/plug hole. The mag would not go down...
