What in Gods name!?
...is that sound?

While tooling around checking my ignition timing with my new distributor I started hearing this terrifying sound. Anyone have any clue as to what it could be?

A stretched timing chain will make that noise, flaps around and hits the timing cover, ask me how I know.

Hard to tell. Sounds like a pulley. Try taking off the belts and try it again. Another thought, you mentioned a new distributor. Could it not be hooked up to the oil pump? That would sound pretty bad, but im assuming you have oil pressure. Right?

to answer a few questions,
That sound does NOT dissipate when rev'd it compounds and sounds absolutely horrid.
I do not believe my plug wires to be swapped, but for simplicities sake I will check them tomorrow.
The oil pump drive shaft is engaged properly with the new dizzy. Things were going fine until I pulled the car in after a brief drive.
I likewise thought it was a pulley, I even thought I knew which one. My power steering pump looked a little fuggly so I took the belt off. To my dismay nothing changed.
That sound doesn't seem to be coming from belts, but try as I may, I can't locate where it is coming from. After walking around the bay and getting as close as I dare with my ear it seems to be coming from the engine. But personally the sound doesn't sound like metal on metal.
Thanks for the quick responses gentlemen, i'll continue brainstorming

Have you tried holding the end of a length of rubber hose, such as fuel line, to your ear and putting the other end to various places on the engine? It's surprising how much you can hear. I'd focus on valve covers and timing chain cover for starters. Good luck.

Spray the belts down with a belt dressing/lube fairly easy. Then if its still their remove a belt at a time to find the pulley or bearing(alt, water pump, steering pump) ect........ thats is making the noise.

mmm mechanics stethoscope sounds exotic. Never heard of one.
I'll try some rubber tubing tomorrow hopefully that will help single out the noise.
Thanks for the ideas everyone, helps to keep me motivated =)

Look for any contact area around inside of shroud where fan blades might be hitting.
Check the fan for excess movement due to loose mounting hardware, or possible pump bearing failure....
Check that shroud is mounted securely.
Check all accessories which are belt driven... alternator, power steering, A/C compressor....
And WHAT is that belt driven device on the right side of the engine? Drop that belt and see if it eliminates the noise!
What about the harmonic balancer? They can come apart too.
The rubber insulator cracks, causing metal to metal contact ???

Alright ladies and gents, this evening, armed with fresh ideas and a boatload of confidence I set out to track down that squeak.
I removed the belt to my power steering and removed my A/C unit, now the remaining accessories that I can think of are the alternator and water pump. I grab myself a hose and place it to my ear, start the car and away I go.
Frantically I search I can't seem to place the sound. I checked valve covers, alternator, fan, water pump...nothing.
Then suddenly the car dies, to my surprise she is no longer pumping fuel. Pulling on the throttle linkage gives me air. I thought it could be a clogged fuel filter but to my dismay I can't track it down. Any brainiacks on here know where it's located.
And finally, is it possible that the screech and lack of fuel could be from the same enemy, the fuel pump?
Thanks in advance,
Brandon
