I found this to be interesting, as a 25 year old Vette weighed about 3200-3400 pounds.
Really, since about 1960 the Vette has been 3000-3500 pounds. It gains a few, loses a few, etc.

From what I have read, it's to make it a two-step process to lock the steering column so you are less likely to do it by accident....
