The Grond Chronicles : Reincarnation Part 8 [Dialup; Dante's Inferno]

Part 1 of The Grond Chronicles : The Reincarnation, dealt with stripping the body panels and removing the entire drivetrain and engine. Details are here
Part 2 documented the complete engine teardown and looked like a scene out of Chernobyl. Details are here
I then auctioned off 2 of my melted pistons to benefit St. Jude Childrens Hospital on the Corvette Forum. That auction raised $2400 for the sick kids - here

Along the way, I bought a JL Audio 18inch subwoofer . And a few amplifiers…
Part 4 documented how to install 4.5inch tubs on a C5 Coupe and a weld-in custom 6 point chrome moly roll cage (cage courtesy of Cajundude). Details are here
At the end of Part 4, I bought a brand new bare LS2 block - here
Part 5 covered the build of the custom fibreglass enclosure for the mega subwoofer, false floor, the very beginnings of the amp racks, and targa top storage. Details are here
During Part 5, I became a Corvette Forum Supporting Tuner - here
Part 6 detailed the installation of a ratchet shifter connected to a 4L60E transaxle transmission. This was a C5 first!. Details here

Part 7, demonstrated the installation of shaved door handles. This mod was performed by the Mod Meister, GB Vette, who travelled all the way from Virginia to install this mod for me. Thanks Gary!!!! Details are here

Part 8, that you are reading now, will detail the main event; the ground-up build of my Madness Monster Motor.
Parts 9, 10, 11, 12 etc. I will reveal as time goes on. This project will stretch for several more months – at least until April 2007. The goal is to be ready for Cruise In VIII.

OK. I have a confession to make….
So now that I have openly and publicly admitted I have a modding problem, and that I obviously have serious “issues”, let’s move on to my latest mod.
Some background information : this engine build, unlike all that have seen before, will be built from a new bare GM LS2 block all the way to a running engine. Why start with a bare block? Because everyone else buys a shortblock, bolts on some heads and then says, “I built my engine”.
This build should be interesting because you will get to see, for the first time, what it really takes to build a high performance, high RPM, big cube stroker engine. At the end of this build, you will understand why Tuners charge around $20,000 for a 1000hp, bulletproof, supercharged engine.
Speed is not cheap.
The goals of this engine are simple; circa 800rwhp all day long in the Florida sun, road race for hours at a time, idle happily in traffic, drive 1500 miles cross country anytime and cruise to the grocery on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Oh yes, and it must have a very loud, nasty idle and scream like a banshee to 7500rpm
Will I achieve my goals? Well, let’s see….
We start with a completely bare LS2 block with not even water plugs or dowels..
4.000 inch bore
As I described here – the LS2 block is quite different from the LS1/LS6 block
New bare block with not even water or oil plug – everything must be bought new and installed.
Brand new LQ9 heads, Lunati full race hydraulic lifters, and Godzilla cam…
242/248 610/615 on a 114LSA ... Should have a “bone stock” idle…. NOT!!!
Eagle forged crankshaft – 4.000 inch stroke. Rock solid high horsepower crank…
But I really wanted a Callies forged crank – sadly, it was $1000 more than my budget allowed…
4.000 inch stroke + 4.000 inch bore = 402 cubic inches. Or 6.6 liters
Since this is a supercharged application…
let’s begin by pinning the crank…
Unfortunately, the Eagle crank (unlike more expensive Callies or Lunati cranks) does not come keyed all the way to the snout
Drilled and reamed. Ready for the pin.
So I cut back a bit on the crank, but definitely not on the rods.. Lunati Pro Mod forged Rods
Possibly the most important component in any application is max. strength rods
One of the reasons not to buy Scat or other low budget rods is this..
Each rod is perfectly balanced from the factory
And comes complete with a special lubricant and ARP bolts.
