Sounds like the battery. the injectors need 9 volts to fire below that the engine won't run. would account for the engine dying and slow cranking.

My 17 Z51 has an extended warranty for 10 yrs. for gas fumes coming from the fuel pump housing. If you start smelling it in your garage that could be the problem.
