Re: Battery vs. Alternater Question???? (Gonzo)

I agree. If the alternator was bad, you would not be shoving 14 volts at the system. Battery life of 5 years is good, crap settles in the bottom of the case and shorts out the plates.

Re: What causes corrosion on battery terminals?? (no_radio)

With air being the initiating culprit, the simple fix is to put a small gob of vaseline or grease on top of the terminal post. You may need to add more in a year or two. THe engine compartment heat...

Re: Adding Waterwetter - KISS (DiabolicalDave)

I can not seem to find water wetter in any of the local auto supply stores. Just how does one purchase this product and what is the approximate cost?

Re: Radiator Fin Comb (Frank Zeman)

That all makes sense to me. Thank you very much. I knew it would be relatively simple, but it was escaping me. Old age, no doubt. I was hesitating doing a new radiator. Did the cleanout between...

Radiator Fin Comb

OK, I have a lot of bent fins, especially right behind the fan. Bought this "comb" at Speedway Auto parts. It comes with no instructions and the clerk looks like a deer in the headlights. May be...

Purpose of coolant catch can

I thought the function of the design was to allow air to pass out of the system and pull fluid back in on the cooling cycle. Ergo, a few cycles of heating and cooling and trapped air should all be...

Re: 1987-Wont start with dash fuse hooked up (eamador11)

Sounds like the circuit that includes the VATS relay. Does it start after a 4 to 5 minute wait? If so, that is the VATS.

Re: Removing exhaust plug (BigTodd)

A long metal rod and a hammer did the trick on my "87. According to previous posts, that is supposed to be good for 5 hp. It will give a little more buzz in the driving compartment.

Re: What is the difference between the 84-89 STD. Radiator and the Heavy Duty Option (toy350)

My 87 lists an option called VO1 which it states is a heavy duty radiator. That option does NOT show on my car's list of equipment. My car does have option B4P which is a radiator booster fan.

Re: Vats problem?????? (Bob88Convertible)

From previous posts, check the key (resistor chip may not be making contact), ignition switch, and VATS starter relay. Does anyone know just exactly where the relay is? All my book says is "behind...

Re: why is my 86 L98 not starting everytime??? (DETROITc4)

Did they have a VATS in '86? Sounds suspiciously similar to the problem I am having with my '87. I have just about gotten to the VATS start relay as the culprit.

Re: Codes 33 & 34 ; MAF ...How serious ? (Number 2)

Like the previous posts say, change the relays. I diddled around with mine for a year or so, as it was intermitent. Finally just changed them and voila, no more problem. My only problem was having...

Re: New Relays for MAF ; how much and how effective ?? (Number 2)

Changed out both of them recently. Pretty easy job, just a little snug to get at things. Both are on the firewall right behind the battery. Relays themselves were $15 each and I had to go to two...

Re: Switched over to 10W30 last night. (scorp508)

5/30 and 10/30 should be different only at the cold start condition. The 5 of course will be thinner at that time. Once up to normal temperatures, they should both be the same.

Thanks Pete. The starting is still 100% so I plan to leave it alone until the problem crops up again. However, you have provided some good ideas and I appreciate that and will give them a go if...

Re: Electrical Anamoly?? (Frank Zeman)

The two relays changed were the MAF relays behind the battery that the SES code normally refers to. The starter relay and VATS relay were not involved. That's what left me in a quandry. I was...

Electrical Anamoly??

Have been setting SES codes for a long time. Finally changed the two relays and that fixed the problem. In the meantime, have had trouble starting about half the time the last several months. No...

Most water wetting agents break down the surface tension to get better contact with whatever the fluid is touching. Soap tends to do the same thing but in a cooling system the foam produced is a...
