Default Codes 33 & 34 ; MAF ...How serious ?

SES light comes on a varying times so I had it checked out in 2 shops. Both pulled codes 33 & 34 (Mass Air Flow) but 2 different diagnosis: One said get it repaired ASAP or it will affect the performance of the car and the engine. Another said in reality its not a critical problem and can wait a few months before I see any performance effects. I'm a bit tight with cash right now but don't wanna risk the car....Can the MAF wait a few months and what are the consequences ?? Thx.

Just like in an earlier post the MAF usually isn't the problem (it certainly could be though). At $12 a piece I would replace the 2 relays behind the battery first. A rebuilt MAF can be had from places like bumper-bumper for about $140 or so, I would never get one from the dealer at I think $400

Can you drive it like that, yes but may not be much fun sometimes and certainly won't get good gas milage which could pay for a couple relays.

yes, it's almost always a bad contact of one of the two relays (behind the battery) that causes this error.

i didn't even replace mine - i opened the relay housings up and cleaned the contacts - i know they're cheap, but it only took half an hour to do - they've been fine for 4-5 years since :)

I dont see how a 34 couldnt be serious, if your car goes into limp home mode youll find out real quick. Code 34 can be an elusive problem.

You should replace the two relays behind the battery first, reset the computer and see if they come back. Otherwise, its the MAF sensor itself and a $220-250 replacement.

I had the same codes on mine. Service engine light etc.
Replaced the MAF burnoff relay and it fixed the problem.
$15.

Does it throw the code all the time or intermittent? I went round and round with this same problem only it was intermittent, so after changing the relays, then the MAF, ended up being the ECM.

Goes to show you can only trust what the computer is telling you if the computer iteslf is sane.

Do you have any other problems like inconsistent idle speed or spark knock under moderate acceleration?

I'm with gbody5, I had the honor of buying all kinds of parts due to listening to a non-computin' computer. :yesnod:

Car seems to be performing OK so far. SES light is intermittent....either not at all or as soon as I start the car. Thanks for the suggestions...I will change the relays and see if it clears the problem.

Our Vettes must be in sync - I was getting the elusive 34 thrown at me every once in awhile. Usually, right after starting the car. Lately, though, I'll be driving and then there's a loss of acceleration - all dash electrics seem fine, e.g. no blinking or going out. This 'no acceleration' problem will last a fraction of a second or 1 second. Then the SES light comes on if the loss was for the full second.

Last night I pulled the plugs out of the 2 relays behind the battery and looked them over. Plugged them back in securely and this morning I got the full 1 second loss followed by the SES light again.

I like the idea of taking the relays apart and cleaning them up. If I need to buy the 2 replacements relays, where should I shop for a good price?

Like the previous posts say, change the relays. I diddled around with mine for a year or so, as it was intermitent. Finally just changed them and voila, no more problem. My only problem was having to go to two dealers since each one only had one relay.
