I *think* the guage will read 80psi if you short the wire from the sender. Therefore my bet is the wire from the sending unit is trapped between the bellhousing and the block, and grounding out.

I do, but it is/was on an 86 with 17x11.5" CCWs. No rubbing on the fender, but the wheel would rub on the swaybar when turning to full lock each direction...

Not a good datapoint for you since...

You need to be sure the rear bracket to the exhaust manifold is in place...

For me it was easy justification - the car to be converted had the complete suspension already done for track usage, the 700R4 was the weak link. Replace the weak link and move on. Simple.
