Cantan 7qt oil pan - proper oil level? (picture)
In the picture below I have 7 qts of oil poured into the pan. As you can see I have poured oil into the filter as well. Is this the ideal oil level? The reason I ask is because the stock dip stick is inaccurate with this pan.

I have the same pan. The chick at Canton told me the 7 qts is total system capacity. She said in a new motor(mine was) put in 7 1/2 qts. After motor is run, and oil drained, fill with 7 qts. I did this and my dipstick was accurate. I did not fill the pan. Didn't think to do it or I would have.

It has been a few months but it seems that when I put in 7qts in the engine with that pan that the dip stick read low.

Mine reads 1 quart low.......the add mark.....with 7 quarts, stock dip stick....................I can live with that, just tell anybody changing your oil or they'll over fill it....well some do run 8 quarts.

Install the pan...level the car...pull the overflow bolt out...fill the engine with oil until it starts coming out of the overflow hole...wait until it stops and mark the dipstick and that will be your new full mark.
That's what I did and I've never had a problem.

The Canton windage tray is lower in the pan than the factory windage tray in the factory pan using the dipstick as the reference point. That's why, when filled as shown in your 7qt pic, the oil level will appear to be 1/2 qt low on the factory dipstick but is actually correct.

I just checked and the top inch or so of the dip stick tube is a larger diameter so I guess cutting it off would not work.
