The thud you are hearing could be loose axle nuts. There are several threads about that issue, just search for them.

Remove the bolts from the tank mounting brackets, then there should be enough room to move the tank out of the way to get the battery out. It is tight but possible.

Yes, I agree with Stock's statement. My car is going into a local performance shop next month to have the fuel pump replaced because of the gas smell. No big deal to me, it's just part of maintenance...

I bought a magnetic shock replacement for my 2009 base FE2 at Rock Auto. Don't know about availability for a '12, but it might be worth a look.

Update: Looks like they have front and rear for FE2...
