This is a long shot but I know that if the coolant temp sensor (the one in the front of the water pump) is not connected or bad it will not shift into overdrive.

Sounds like the same thing mine did when the fuel pump was going out. Hard starting and a lot of smoke. Check your fuel pressure.

Had the same thing happen to mine...turn signal switch. It took me awhile to figure out since I still had the center brake light but it has a separate switch at the brake pedal. :smash:
