I've had the same problem over the last 5-6 years as it will not crank for about 5-10 minutes of key turning, shift slamming and steering column adjusting. then Boom ... she starts and I'm' good...

my 1980 350 L48 has 78k original miles. I rode motorcycles for the first 23 years of ownership and let it sit for years in the garage and pulling it out for a few weeks at a time during the year...

don't use thinner! mineral spirits are best. thinner will craze the finish and make the paint drip or go soft. then the surface texture will look wrinkled.

let it dry for 15 minutes and the mineral spirits will strip the excess off and leave the lettering in the well real good with out wetting the rest of paint at all.

no ... Abolutely not. Shop towel and flat stick removes excess paint really well. Mineral spirits very mild. No swirling either. finish on the car is quite good.
