My `65 had manual brakes and I loved them. I could keep them at the edge of lock-up without ever going over. A little stiff maybe but nothing like a power brake with a failed booster.

I had a MGA in high school with them. As others have mentioned, harder to keep clean than other wheels. The spokes also required retightening regularly (not difficult though).
