Movie "Con Air" and 67 Corvette
Many of you will remember the Movie "Con Air" with Nicolas Cage. The move has a 1967 Corvette convertible in it.
During the movie plot, the 67 Vette is hooked to the back of a large cargo plane with a chain. The plane takes off, dragging the 67 Corvette into the air with it.
The 67 Vette eventually disconnects from the plane, and falls back to earth.
The 67 Vette has a custom license plate on it that says AZZKIKR. No interpretation needed.
I mention this because I was recently at the Alabama tag office, and they were in the process of evaluating a request for a personalized license plate with ZZKIKR on it. They had previously denied requests for AZZKIKR.
They were ready to approve the request, when someone realized that the plate type requested was a University of Alabama commemorative plate.
If they had approved this request, this is what the plate would have looked like...request denied.

They can't cover everything and some things slip by -- like this one (captured this morning). I know. Gross ? Right ? This is an actual legitimate license plate on a car in another state.
Would some Florida DMV clerk catch it ? 50/50 chance I'm thinkin'.
Shame on you if you have to google the word - I hope you've had breakfast

2 Great pieces of creativity.
Too bad there will be someone who has to call the local DMV to report they are offended.

In Alabama (and other states I assume), law enforcement often reports plates that slipped by and are on cars.
The state can and does revoke these plates.

How is there any way to deny any message on a plate? How is this NOT protected by 1A, but the idiot in the pickup truck with "FF**** TRUMP" is protected?

Because its issued through a governmental agency ... and you can express your 1A rights through other means that doesn't make the government appear to condone it...
New York has broader guidelines apparently:

I could see my boss objecting, or a concerned parent, but I don't see how the government can prevent me from saying what I want on my plate. It's not condoning it, it is NOT disallowing.

The Supreme Court ruled on it in a Texas case. You can easily research it.

Perhaps the argument that allows the state to censor what's on the plate revolves around whether or not the license plate constitutes speech. The license plate is a government creation used by the government. The state isn't stopping you from putting the text rejected as license plate number on a bumper sticker or placard in the car's back window.

Some do get by........
A friend who is Italian wanted to get WOP SPD, they said they would give it to him but if there was one complaint they would pull it.

Back in the 70's I was behind an AMC with the NY plate 69 OMY. Was surprised they allowed it.

Separate from the license plate discussion, there are two things wrong.
1 - the movie is stupid a dozen ways to Sunday. 'Nuff said on that.
2 - I dislike the characterization of the '67's owner as a prototypical arrogant and moronic Corvette owner.
Other than that, it's a great movie.
