08 A6 stuck in drive
I know I've read about this problem before, but after doing a search I come up with nothing!! I've been having problems shifting out of park into drive on and off for sometime. But, this evening something happened in the shifter and now all I have is either neutral or drive. Help!!!

In almost all cases like that, the shifter is broken and needs to be replaced. If you're mechanically inclined there is a slight possibility you might be able to remove the shifter and fix it but........
Anyway, here's just one similar situation and in my post I linked to another one, just for info:

Thanks, Rick!! My car is stuck in the basement and I removed the battery cable to keep from running the battery down. Can't wait to see what kind of problems that has caused!!!

DIY fix for shifter problem discussed here:

This is definitely fixable. Some possibilities:
-- Brake light fuse is blown
-- Brake switch (you should hear a faint clicking when applying the brakes)
-- Reverse lock-out pin is damaged
-- Park-lock solenoid malfunction/damage
-- Shifter cable/linkage damage
I believe the worst-case requires shifter replacement (~$800?).
Unfortunately, a simple problem (like the brake switch or even a weak/dying battery) can interfere with shifting...someone then forces the shifter, causing damage...

Depending on the problem, here's a DIY bypass that might fix it:

Hope you asked the service mgr for a split on the parts/labor. I've done that. End result was they got GM to co-op a 50/50 split with the dealer. As such, I paid half of the dealers 50%.
