hey boys....help me with my 1998 issues.
Hey boys, I picked up my 98 vette today and drive it home after a long 4 hour solo drive.
-The positives, car only used 1/4 tank, just amazing on gas, its an A4 with 2.73.
-Car drove strong on highway no issues smooth as a whistle.
Now my issues. I dont think it was well cared for. The driver side seats rocks a bit and has a small worn tear spot at my butt/hip level.
Damn annoying squeeky stearing wheel when I turn it.
Noisy fuel pump whine.
Rear left bose speaker doesnt work.
Glass/plastic targa top is severly scratched.
Car doesnt like to click into gear that well sometimes it says drive but its in N I have to wiggle and play with the stick, though i dont mind playing with a stick (no jokes here)

You can easily replace the seat covers in the garage or have a trusty friend do it! Pretty straight forward:
New Covers can be had from a variety of vendors: Plus there are custom two tone colors you can go with too
http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette...-411-9350.html
Fuel Pump Whine = Notorious, can be swapped out with a new one, nothing is going to happen if it stays in there, long trips seem to be what brings it on mostly! Actually a very easy to do as well:

Speaker: Could be the connection on the speaker or a bad speaker, could swap the passenger side with the drivers side to see if that is the problem -
Can gt replacement speaker from Ebay fairly cheap:

Targa Top: Many just have it painted because once it is scratched the Lexan cannot be refinished very well:

A4 Shifter might need to be replaced: Ebay again, need more detail too as to what it is doing precisely:

Gotta jam!

The steering wheel squeak/moan is coming from the bushing where the shaft goes through the firewall, I sprayed Boeshield T-9 on the shaft under the dash, I applied quite a bit and let it sit awhile and it seems to have stopped the moan for now. I know it sounds like its in the wheel but mine sure was not. Its worth a try anyway

Lots of good info here, you should be fine. The squeek in the steering and the fuel pump whine are common to the 1998 model year and were corrected with the 1999 model year. The rocking seat and worn seat covers were probably due to a previous owner who had difficulty entering/exiting the car due to their size or physical condition. I purchased my car when it was basically new so it does not have the rocking seat problem and my original seat covers are like brand new. Seat covers are an easy fix. There are used targa tops for sale on here all the time for $400-$500 in the FS section.

(1) The actual shifter cable might need to be replaced, another fairly easy fix
(2) The Lock-out solenoid at the shifter might need to be unplugged so that you will not get stuck in Park even when applying the brake - It is the BTSI solenoid, I have the instructions on how to do this as well.
This is simple easy and straight forward too, I did this to mine and never have had any issues again.
Extra:
It is worth taking the fellow Forum member up on the free rear speakers, if for some reason it is not "JUST" a speaker and it is actually the radio (highly unlikely), you could always ship them back to him.
Plus if it turned out to be the actual stock radio you could easily swap it out with another stock one from another member who has one sitting in their garage unused. OR do a Double DIN DVD Nav stereo set-up from Double D Mods
Thanks,Matt

In searching around online I found that GMPartsDirect.com is about the cheapest place to buy OEM replacement parts, such as the seat back cover. (a.k.a.: seat skin)
Since these are a special order item and are non-refundable, you need to make sure you order the right part number.
You can send a query to GMPartsDirect.com with your VIN and a description of the part you need and they'll give you the part number to order. (Go to: Customer Service Form)

Also:
Keep in mind that the seat covers are 1/2 leather and 1/2 vinyl and after a long time they will fight each other due to the different materials and stretch at the seams, (plastic and leather don't make for a good combo)
When I did my seat covers new I opted for the Leather-Like Vinyl covers - wouldn't go back to 1/2 and 1/2 - can't tell the difference either!
Plus these covers cost less as well!
Thanks,Matt

I see one of the members offered you his bose speakers and his stock radio. Great people here. As far as your rocking seat goes until you get around to fixing it correctly this worked for me. Take a small towel and fold it to the size of a brick. Raise your seat and put the folded towel under and in the rear of the seat. Next lower the seat onto the towel. The towel keep pressure on the seat so it can not rock. Depending on the position and height of the seat you may need a bigger towel like a beach towel. Anyway I hope it helps until you get it fixed.
