Default gas tanks.......two?

First time under the C6 using ramps, looking for telltale drips, etc and found everything in order.
Looking at the gas tank(s) I was curious what the connection was between the 2 sides. Do they fill and empty both at the same rate?
Is the fuel pump located in one of them?

The C6 system is similar to the 2004 C5, described in this pdf file:
