I would pull the oil filter and cut it apart ....
I would pull the oil filter and cut it apart . Then use a magnet to see if it's full of camshaft . Usually the cam is iron so if it goes away it ends up in the filter .

while you're running it with the valve covers off...
while you're running it with the valve covers off see if the pushrods are turning . Usually if they're spinning so is the lifter.

if you just use a PCV valve with no breather...
if you just use a PCV valve with no breather you'll suck the gaskets out (usually from under the intake) . Pre PCV motors just used a draft tube to vent all the blowby and vapors to atmosphere ....
