My 58 Corvette pics

As requested a few pics of the 58 Corvette. Will need to total resto and has a 350 which will need to be swapped over for a 283. Not sure what the 350 is from.

Wow, that's going to be one expensive restoration! There's hardly anything original that's salvageable on the whole car. Too bad the trunk irons are missing as well.......$$$

outlaw67 01-17-2012 06:43 AM

and the fun begins, love the 58 hoods , good luck

Looking Good! Keep us posted on the progress.

Audiophobe 01-17-2012 07:08 AM

Is that black badge on the back original (maybe for overseas sales)? Don't recall seeing that before.
When will you start?
Keep us updated during the resto!

gbvette62 01-17-2012 08:18 AM

Wow, that car's going to keep you busy for a while. Have fun!

It looks to be the stock emblem, but without the chrome bezel installed and a black 62 backing plate, in place of the brushed stainless 58-61 part.

corvetteed 01-17-2012 08:26 AM

Luv the '58's. Thx for posting.

Railroadman 01-17-2012 08:48 AM

Very cool!

Are your plans to make it back original, or a driver which is not 100% pure but fun to drive? (NOT implying a 100% original is not fun to drive also). There is no right or wrong, it's whichever way you feel like doing it. Either way there are guys here who have done the same, so don't be afraid to ask questions when you hit a snag!

capevettes 01-17-2012 08:57 AM

Have fun with the restoration. Do you have the trunk spears? Looks like shag carpet. Probably a 70's add on. Keep the pics coming as you progress

:iagree: If your plan is to end up with a mostly original car, this is probably not the right candidate. Being a transitional year, '58 parts can be quirky, just to figure out what the correct part is. Expensive too (trunk irons for example).

But if your end goal is a "budget driver", then that may be realistic.

Anyway, I sure admire your courage!

BTW: what the heck happened to that deck panel? Never seen one so distorted.

INMYBLOOD 01-17-2012 09:59 AM

Mine were on the car but they are pitted. Yes tell us the story of how you got it.

'58 Restoration

Thanx for posting the pix.

Been there and done it - don't envy you - but know you'll do a GREAT job.

Its worth it all when its done.

That's a worthy project. You'll do well

Congrats from another '58 owner.

Where did you find it?

I liked the picture composition of the 3rd pic down.

INMYBLOOD 01-17-2012 12:03 PM

Just noticed the cool fringe on the seat.

I can't believe someone filled in the original emblem half globe thingie to do this to the front.

Instead of this. But to tell you the truth I missed seeing it for quite awhile.

Same question I had, you can get a lot more car for a lot less money for a driver, particularly with a 58. Restoration $$$ can go through the roof the closer you get to "original". Good luck with whatever path you take.

1959RedConv 01-17-2012 01:59 PM

Wow! Looks like quite a restore job ahead. Be interested in the costs as you move forward.

Good luck.

wilbur 01-17-2012 02:25 PM

Congratulations, I remember seeing that 58 forsale on the net, i beleive it came from southern california? keep us posted with a bunch of pictures. What were the original colours?

C6Matt 01-17-2012 02:45 PM

cool project, it will be a cool car whatever you do. Progress pics are a must!

edit: and with two tach's it must rev to the moon!

Yeah it does depend if you want 'original' parts or will settle for repro items.

Here's a page for some New Old Stock.

http://www.bairscorvette.com/c1nosparts.html

The OP has stated doing a total resto so it may work out better to restore this one than to pay for a much more expensive one and totally restore that, could be a case of 'what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts'.

Nut and bolt restorations aren't cheap regardless.

Nice, can't wait to see pictures of your restoration; my first Vette was a '58; I bought it for $1,000, that was in '69, it was a 270hp, two four barrel, 098 cam four speed with 32,000 one owner miles on it. Of course, I got rid of that 283, sold it for $75 complete with the duel fours and everytime I saw the buyer of it, it complained he got screwed. I also gave the hubcaps away to my buddy for his pickup.

That emblem and the CORVETTE letters are from a 62. I doubt someone meant to do that. Probably has a 62 frontend or clip from being wrecked in the front. As you say, it can easily be fixed like 58-60.

http://i810.photobucket.com/albums/z...in%20LA/14.jpg

I looked at another 58 barn car years ago that had the same looking rear decklid. Was from someone forcing the lid closed when the top was not properly stowed and left it that way.

Good luck with the resto. As someone else asked, any idea of the original color? Should be able to tell by looking up under the dash.

hedgehead 01-18-2012 09:59 AM

It's a start.

Restoration??

Give it a quick clean, get it roadworthy, then use it as the coolest daily driver ever.

It's not like you'd be worried about car-park dents.

Well guys, the latest is that I have to pass this car up unfortunately because of circumstances but someone else will pick it up. Thanks for the input to date.

I believe it's in California, Matt Clarke is travelling around the US inspecting cars right now, he may have already inspected this one so you'll have a head start.

For more details please call Matt on 727-364-8707

StephenSLR 01-19-2012 02:51 PM

It's in L.A.

Some more pics here:

http://s810.photobucket.com/albums/z...cpZZ1QQtppZZ20\

Matt isn't inspecting it to NCRS detail, just basics like rust, frame, body, etc. He may do a video and run through it.

62corvette 01-19-2012 06:06 PM

Any guess as to how many original parts are still on the car? 12? 18?

Thanks for adding this detail Stephen.

Just some clarification guys. I was in the process of purchasing but had to pull out. Car is still in the US as Stephen has advised above.

It was listed for 27.5k, I believe Matt got him down to 24k, not sure if he got it any lower after the inspection.

What a piece of Sh*% ! Leave it for the brave !

Waffle 01-21-2012 01:30 AM

I love the carpet! Is that shag or the more fashionable "High-low" ? I may need to do that to my '58.

My thoughts exactly

ghoastrider1 03-04-2012 08:10 AM

all the gages are wrong..think motor swap ended cable driven tach..I wouldnt be surprised if this car was a low budget drag racer for a while.

vettebuyer6369 03-04-2012 02:19 PM

I think this is the '58 I was just reading about in my new Hemmings magazine-

"Gold coves, tan interior. $27.5," at Beverly Hills car club.

Says 350, but I think with that oil fill tube its a 327.

All the gauges are wrong, even the only Corvette one left, which is the speedo from some other year.

When I got my '58, I quickly found out these cars with beat you to death in little parts costs if you try to do it right. This car could be a fun driver if bought cheaply enough, but a restoration would put you straight into red ink.

5869vette 03-04-2012 02:50 PM

Right, If you could pick it up for less than 10 gran,
it would be a good candidate fo a rat rod.
Wouldn`t even think about restoring this car.
Peace out.
Later
