Glove Box Handle Broken - Won't Open - HELP!
Went to open the glove box (the one in the passenger side dash) and the handle breaks free in my hand. But the glove box doesn't open. I've spent an hour messing with it. By my estimation, without the handle the latch shouldn't hold the door close. It should just fall open.
I can't seem to get the latch to release. Any ideas? The latch/handle mechanism basically broke in two. The handle just came off with the lock still intact. |
bump... I can't be the only one to have this issue.
|
bump... Really nobody has had this problem?
|
PM Bump... Come on somebody has seen this.
|
This is just getting depressing... come on.

mine broke to ! but the whole thing came out. i put it back in for the meantime. the only thing that is holding it up is the lock. i put the key in and turn it to hold it in place. might want to start there. the key might release it for you. good luck:cheers:

You 2 must be the only ones that have ever broke the glove box.

In case anyone is listening, it is July 1 2009 and my 2006 glove box door handle just broke into pieces. Now it won't open. Any ideas on how to open without damaging the door itself? There doesn't seem to be much out there on this failure - help!

OK, yes the door should just fall open. The back of the v arm that the lock bar sits in when the glove box is closed has a notch that the arm on the handle holds in place. If the handle falls out and the arm comes with it the glove box should just fall open.
To get mine open I had to take a dremel and cut away the rest of the latch until the screws gave way. Then put a new latch back in. |
Glove Box latch
I live in Oklahoma City and my dealer tells me there is not a latch, for my broken glove box, available . Does anybody know where I can get one?
Thanks  |

Broken Glove Box Latch
I have a 2007 and mine just broke. As I went to open the glove box the latch snapped in two. I did not even pull hard on the thing. I used pliers to pull down on the little metal tab. and it opened. But this still sucks as I'm out of warranty.

My handle pulls up but the glove box won't open. It appears that the handle breaks easily, so I'm afraid to force it. At least my proof of insurance card is in the cup holder, however, the pink slip is stuck inside.

What??
And have someone suggest that I do a search because this subject has been discussed previously? Never mind, just close it.

All 87Sam was saying is that if a moderator sees this thread it will be locked since the last posting was over 45 days old (almost a year ago). So :iagree: start your own thread. Some reading for you: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/foru...s-or-more.html Perhaps if you lead with" I've tried searching and found a few threads but I'm still stuck" you'll head off some of the people who respond with "try searching". Also, the more knowledgable members typically only respond that way when a topic has been so beat to death that a four year old could find sufficient info on it searching. Your issue is not one of those... |
Glove Box Won't Open
You guys aren't going to like this, but I had the same issue on my C5. For some unknown reason the release wouldn't let the door open. It released partially, but was stuck as tight as could be. This is the part you won't like - I used 3 screwdrivers - two to apply leverage down on the door from the top on each side of the latch - the third one was a wide blade. When I tried to open the door the glove box light would come on so I could barely see inside and leveraging down I could put the wide blade on the latch. A couple of well placed blows with dead blow hammer on the latch catch proved to be the answer. The door popped open and I could see that there was some material (paper) that had wedged in the catch. After clearing the latch it seems to work perfectly and none the worse for wear. Taking a hammer to my baby was not an easy thing to do, but it worked.:willy:

Stuck Glob Box (was paper in latch)
I was able to free the stuck glove box (without a hammer) on my 98 C5 by doing the following:
1. Ensure that the latch is in the unlocked position 2. Hold the latch like you are opening the glove box door 3. Use a wide blade screw driver (actually used a door clip remover with an arched shank) to jostle/jimmy/push the latch open by working the driver in between jam of the glove box directly above the lock. This procedure worked for me, and I recommend not forcing anything or you may break something. :smash: **Disclaimer: Use these instructions at your own risk, no suitably is implied or given** |
