Replacing the turn signal switch
This evening I tried to activate the turn signal for a right turn and the signal stalk just kind of flopped and no right turn signal. The left worked OK at first. A little later I signaled a left turn. The signal worked but now the lever is flopping in both directions. High beams and washer functions still work. Do I replace the ring and connector arrangement that is offered by Ecklers and others as a replacement turn signal switch, or do I have to replace the turn signal lever as well? TIA!

Just did mine and it's a major PITA. I'll bet it's not the switch. What happens is a raised piece on the WIPER switch that activates the turn signal switch breaks off and the stalk wont activate right turn, left turn works but won't cancel manually. Sound familar?? The fix is pull the airbag modual, steering wheel, airbag coil, lockplate and canceling ring, pull the turn signal switch as far as you can after removing the metal wishbone piece attached to it. pull the ignition cylinder key switch, then the upper housing cover and then you can remove the broken wiper/ pivot switch. Ecklers has the best price on the switch you need. Good Luck to you.

Green Hornet, thanks! Your description is exactly what I experienced. I'll be ordering the wiper switch in a few minutes. Based on your description of the work involved I haven't decided if I will do the work or have it done.

Sorry it took so long to reply I've been away from the computer for few days. I ordered the part from Corvette Central (they had it in stock), and the car is going to the shop in the AM. I will invest in the manual soon but based on the description of the work involved, and demands on my time I decided to follow the path of least resistance and pay to have the work done. I'll post an update when the work is done.

Wiper/pivot switch
Green Hornet, this is exactly why had just happened to my 1992 Corvette. I can't find the part you are suggesting anywhere. Do you have a part number?

Lori, welcome to the Forum. You have responded to a post that is 12 years old, so you probably won't get the answer you're looking for. We call that a "Zombie" thread. Please start a new thread.
 |

It;s the bottom 2 that are out of stock, maybe Ecklers or Corvette Central would have one. check their site with the part numbers.

Your best option is to look on eBay.
I just purchased one from eBay a couple of months ago. |

Hi All - I know this is a 13yo thread, but this exact thing has happened to me!
I parked the car, thinking 'I'll worry about that later'..... but seeing as my rego is now due, I think I better start worrying about it - especially considering I'm in Australia, and I'll have to try & ship parts during this global pandemic! So can anyone give me some updated info on what the actual parts are that I need, as I'd like to get the parts here so I can pull it all apart & fix it at the same time - rather than dismantle & then wait weeks for parts to arrive! Is it this: https://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corv...1989-1996.html And seeing this is a common problem, does anyone know of a step by step or video showing what to do? I think I'll need to get a FWSM..... |
Pandemic or not it's always best to get the parts before you tear your car apart. Nothing worse than tearing it apart, rendering car inoperable, and the part you need is no longer available, and you can't even find a used one. Even worse, you break something else during dis-assembly that you now need to find. Yes, I have an 1984....

Which is OK provided you KNOW what part you need...... Hence my question! :-D
After getting the steering column, it was easier to take it apart on the work bench to see how it came apart, and then how it went back together. Dino was a lot of help, and I would order parts from him again. It was more expensive to buy the entire steering column than just the part, but I couldn’t find just the part so I did what I had to do to get it fixed. A plus was I got a really nice almost new steering wheel with the column to replace my worn out one. Good Luck! |

You need a windshield wiper control switch Originally GM part number 26015119 or AC Delco D6395C. Was also made by an aftermarket company under part no. 1S4664 Those are the numbers I found when looking for my 1992 GM decided to make one part that controls about 4 functions, that's why a broken washer switch causes the turn signal not to work. Finding one these days is a challenge. Here are a couple pics to show you what broke https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...65ed184e7d.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...c274222556.jpg |
Replying to this thread to push it back up to the top. I am in the middle of working on this project and have hit a bit of a snag (and mainly don't want to pull on something and screw it up). If I am following the directions, I need to remove the ignition cylinder to remove the upper housing unit, to then get at the turn signal switch. I have gotten this far (see below) and can tell this piece is connect to the wires for the hazard lights, but don't have a clear idea how to detach them, to then continue with the rest. Help please!
I'd love any help you all can give. If someone has a step by step instructions to remove the upper housing unit for the steering column, I'd love them! Thanks for any help! https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...aae8a4dd3a.jpg |
To be clear are you trying to change the turn signal switch or the wiper switch. The wiper switch is on the left side of the column and the turn signal lever goes into it. When it breaks you end up with a floppy turn signal lever.
In the picture you posted the large yellow and black part is the turn signal switch. Once you remove the hazard knob, you can remove the three screws, disconnect the connector near the bottom of the steering column, and remove the turn signal switch. It takes some doing to get it out and is a good idea to tie a piece of string to the connector so you can use it to guide the wiring back down. If all your trying to change is the turn signal switch you can do it without removing the lock cylinder. |
What He said ^^^
I just finished doing this job 2 weekends ago, and I made a video of my progress in the hopes of assisting someone else trying to do the same job, because I couldn't find anything that was particularity helpful.... I just haven't got around to editing the video, and putting it all together so that I can put it up on Youtube! I did need to loosen the ignition barrel, but didn't remove it all together.... be careful though, there is a little plastic & brass contact that pushes in next to the barrel, and it has a little spring steel clip on it.... when I removed the plastic part, the spring stayed in place, but whilst trying to put everything back together it appeared inside the housing, and I didn't know where it came from! took me half a day trying to find out where it fit, because I didn't want to reassemble with a spare part!! Thankfully I spotted it in my video, and ended up working it out! I'll try & get that video together soon. |

. And if anyone has had luck finding one, that would also help! |
