(TH-400) Can you change the shift-linkage seal...
 
...without dropping the pan? I removed my exhaust today and got a close look at the area surrounding the shift linkage. It appears the seal around the shift shaft is leaking. Don't want to drop the pan (again). Can the seal be accessed/replaced from outside?

No, you have to drop the pan to do it right. You could jam on another o-ring from the outside but I doubt it will help.

I know that on most trannys you can replace the shift-shaft-seal easily. Never did one on my Turbo 400 though so he may be right.

We have a small tool at the shop that will remove the shaft seal without dropping the pan. I think it will do 400's. Most tool jobbers (Snap-on, Matco, etc.) carry them on the truck. Better auto parts stores may also have them. G/L

Just did this. there is a tool which slides over the shaft and removes the seal from the outside.

:thumbs: Is it a GM "special tool" or a generic thing that works on different seals?

Probably worth it if you factor the cost of the fluid you just poured. Plus you will have another tool and that's always a good thing.

Probably not worth it to purchase the tool vs. taking it to a shop and having it done.

But, you're right. One can never have enough tools!

I don't have a part number for you, but I can vouch for the tool working. Try an internet search for TH400 shaft seal tool or something along those lines. It should be roughly 35-45 bucks.
