Tracking Rail Shipments
When I ordered my 2012 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon, folks in the Cadillac community had figured out how to track rail shipments, and I was able to successfully identify when the rail car with my CTS-V would hit the local railhead. It shipped 10/20/2011 and arrived 10/30/2011 at 8:57pm Orlando.
I'm doing museum delivery, but this may be helpful to others on here.
Here is some detail copy/pasted from cadillacforums, cj2driver has used this method and confirmed it worked for tracking his vette.

First and most important. Never talk to live personnel at the railroad! Only use automated phone system. If it attempts to transfer you to a live person please hang up. The railcar information provided by GM is given as a courtesy. Keep in mind these automated systems are not intended to be used by the public but for use by those in the logistics business that use them daily, all day long.
CSX:
1. The chevy customer service folks or dealer should be able to provide the rail car # and it looks like ETTX######. This may be in GM global connect under history, ask them to look for a value starting in ETTX to help them.
2. Call CSX at 1-800-235-2352
3. When prompted for location or weight, press 1 on your phone for location
3. When prompted for the car initials, either say 'ETTX' or press 32-81-81-92 and wait
4. When prompted for the 6-digit car number, say or key-in your 6 digit ETTX car number
5. When prompted for the next car, either say 'Done' or press the pound sign (#) twice
Union Pacific:
1. Call UP at 1 800 877-5123 1 800 877-5123
2. Follow phone prompts for Trace
3. Say the railcar number complete and clearly. Example ETTX123456 all together
4. Listen for your update
-----------
I also found this site where you can lookup a picture of railroad cars, here's the one my CTS-V was transported on.

I guess it might be interesting to know, but not sure what difference it makes. When it arrives, it arrives. What are you planning to do, follow the train?

I think the Chevy cust svc folks can likely look at the same info, as can the dealer. When I talked to my Cadillac dealer back then, I asked them to look for a number starting with ETTX on the screen... That's the only hint they needed.

I asked the Chevy Customer Service folks about this in the sticky order tracking thread. They never responded to my post.

Adrian--You're the man
Procedure works like a charm--been using it for the past week on one headed to L.A. No hassles with OnStar activation--you can sneak an automated phone call in much as often you want! Thanks--THE most useful thread besides code tracking!

I'm going to be a first time corvette owner. I'm hearing that my order has not been picked up what ever that means? From this forum I seem to be getting the idea that sales aren't that quick. So why have I been waiting so long to get info on my order. Waiting about a month and wondering what is happening. Any insights?

gdurso: Very simple...either your dealer has no allocation for your order and/or you have an option(s) that is on constraint. I'd be on the phone with your dealer and confront him with both items.
