Worlds first Automatic ZR1 review
Well as most of you know by now I had Redline Motorsports do a auto transmission conversion for my 2010 ZR1 as well as add one of thier custom grind cams, port the blower and heads add two inch ARH, TPIS 102 mm TB and make a custom intercooler coolant reservoir.
First off the cam sounds awesome but more importantly it has stock driveability mannerisms. No dead spots or surging at light throttle or throttle tip in. This cam in combination with the ported blower and heads keep this engine breathing and making power well above 6K rpm and has tremendous torque under the curve. 723 HP and 692 TQ through a power robbing automatic that's big power in my opinion!!
On to the auto. This is something I have wanted to do with both of my previous Vipers as I enjoy drag racing slightly more than road racing and get to do it more often.
First of all when I arrived at Redline the install was almost complete there were some unexpected hurdles that Jay (Howards lead tech and custom fabricator) had to overcome which he did with no problem. It was awesome to see this work in progress.
My first drive of the car was the 45 minute trip to PBIR to do some drag racing and transmission tuning for the strip. The upshifts in the city are crisp yet very smooth under light throttle as well as when being more aggressive. The downshifts are very smooth almost un- noticeable. Highway cruising at 75 the engine speed is about 2300 rpm which I am very happy with. Instant MPG were showing 21-23. Not that I really care about that. Just info for those that are curious. While cruising at highway speed hit the throttle and hang the car accelerated like never before, on the downshift from OD to 2nd it was quick and firm but not harsh into 3rd the converter locks up and the car begins to pull even harder, okay time to slow down!!!
The drag strip was completely insane my first pass right off the highway was a 10.1 easing into the throttle of the line I forget the 60 ft. time. Jay made some transmission adjustments let the car cool back at it I decided to add more pedal on the launch... bad idea blew the tires off. Went back at it had a nice 60' of 1.45 which simply threw me into the seat the feeling on my face of the G force pushing me back was just awesome, car shifted flawless as the front end stayed raised all the way down the track to a best of 9.80 at 139 mph for the night. Decided to back that time up with one more pass this time improving my 60' to a 1.41 with an ET of 9.82. IAT were reaching over 190 at the end of the track. The DA this night on Redlines DA meter read 2700+ ft!!!!
Those times were with the stock TB. Jay built the custom coolant reservoir for the intercooler and added the 102 mm TB. They went back to the track car pulled more 9.8 passed however the mph was up to 142.xx. Also with the custom coolant tank IATs never got above 130 thats over a 60 degree improvement over the previous night and it shows in the MPH with an increase of over 3 mph to 142.xx
I will get my car back in NY next week and head to the drag strip on Friday temps here are a good 40 degrees cooler and DA will most likely be well below 1000 ft.
Howard and Jay did a awesome job with my car, the install looks like it came from Bowling Green this way. Very professional install and timely service with great results. What more could one ask for. Thanks guys!!!

4L80 tranny? Also, how big is the cam? I enjoy doing my own shifting at the track, but know that a stab and steer setup would be much faster and more consistant. Sounds like a hell of a nice setup. Congrats and enjoy

A4 or A6 tranny?
With 142 mph, you definitely have more then 9.80s in it..... Your 60's are already damn good though...
I look foward to seeing your progress....
Man you're driving me crazy.... I want to do an A4 conversion so bad I can't see straight....Maybe next years project...
I'm with you though, I like to drag race and win races, better yet keep parts in the car..... aside from breaking crap all the time and watching GTRs and turbo LS' cars pull a length every time I shift a gear.

And that its less likely to break a rear end or an axle shaft and I cant shift as quick as these electronics can thats for sure.

Thanks. I do not know the cam specs. Its a Redline Motorsports custom comp cam grind, that works very well.

Nice. 9.50s should be no problem at all. You need to launch harder. The sixtys in my auto Z06 were high 1.3x but with only 520 NA power just for refernce. Same tranny, probably less stout though. Can't wait to see the new times.

With almost 700 Ft lb tq at 2500 rpm ya have to be delicate not to blow the tires off. With your 520 Im sure you were able to just mat the pedal. Cant do it with this. I tried. I will see 1.3x somethings im sure.
