BINGO $2.16 Fix for Creaking Glass Top
Thanks to the guys in the long "closed" topic
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...or-3-03-a.html
the creaking glass top in my 2008 C6 is FIXED. My car is new (to me) with only 11K on the clock but the creaking glass top was driving me crazy. The selling dealer did the normal fixes (adjusting and adding lube) and it got even worst. I read the closed CF posting and figured it was worth a try. I did it two steps. When I inspected the o-rings on my glass top, they both looked flat and old. Step #1 was to just replace the GM installed 0-Rings. That really helped but there was still some minor creaks so I went to Step #2 and added 7/16 x32 (#78) as shown in the picture.
BINGO.... problem solved for $2.16 from the local hardware store on Sunday morning.
This is an update. After a few weeks the new O-Rings crushed and the top started creaking again. Drill down to the last of this thread and you will see my latest "fix" based on a posting from another user to use shrink wrap.
!!! UPDATE 1-Oot-2013
This is an update to share the double O-Ring fix worked but did not last. The following are the steps taken and I think it is now fixed
I did three part (belt and suspenders) fix but I think the winner was adding the E-Clip that is documented at
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...ing-noise.html
- First, I added the 3/16" E-Clip to the outside of the rollers. I could not find 5/32" E-Clips so I used what I had that is the same used by others.
- I stripped all 0-Rings and cleaned the posts so the Heat Shrink would hold better.
- Covered the post with 3/8" Heat Shrink Tubing
- Added new 9/16 x 5/1 x 1/8 #24 O-Rings on top of the Heat Shrink
The reason for using the larger heat shrink tubing was to cover the entire post and putting the O-Ring on top of the tubing helps hold the tubing in place. My first attempt using smaller tubing did not work as the tubing would come off when the top was removed. I feel the O-Ring will help hold the tubing
- Lubed everything with waterproof grease. I did not have the GM recommended lube but fingered this would work until I could find some
Bingo… no creaks and I have lots of spare parts if I need to do it again. Like mentioned above I think adding the E-Clip really helped.

Put those o-rings in about 6 months ago, and instantly no noise, but it's time replace again, noise coming back.

If I remember correctly they only work on early 08's and older Vettes. There is/was a TSB on the latches. If there's warranty on the car get them replaced for the real fix. Also,a whole bunch of white grease I bought at a Honda dealer, after someone on here said that's what they used, quieted it down to the point I almost forgot to get the new latches.

I'm going to try it. I've used SuperLube and it lasts about a week and then the creaking comes back. I'm tired of having people get in my car and the first thing they do is say 'what is that noise" and make a weird face.

Eric,
I used the URL you posted earlier to get the Photobucket to appear in my posting. That is the good news. The bad new is I can't figure out how you find the link. I just went back to my Photobucket Library and none of the options on the right are even close to the URL you provided. If I click on the "Update Link Options" which one should I have checked?
I am new to the Photobucket, so I do appreciate your help

Arkay, for my post I used a site called postimage.org. One of the really cool free apps they have is a screenshot capture and upload feature. If you choose to save the file to your computer, it saves it as a PNG file. If you need to post on a forum (say here) you have two options. One, you can save a reference link where the image is stored on Postimage's server and then using the [img] [/img] brackets drop your link in between and you are good to go. However, if the forum or website you are posting on requires an html link, you also have that created by the application at the time you capture your screen image. I have been using these guys for almost two years and I love how easy they are to work with. They don't care about content as you have the option to choose between work safe and not and best of all...there is no cost.
Hope this helps...
