2011 2012 Coupe Recall
GM recalls 6,006 Corvette Coupes for rear hatches
David Shepardson/ Detroit News Washington Bureau
General Motors Co. said Saturday it is recalling 6,006 new Chevrolet Corvette Coupes in North America that might fail to meet a federal safety standard covering rear hinges.
The issue was discovered in early September, and GM halted shipment of the vehicles for three days as it investigated.
The recall covers 2011 and 2012 models — including 5,755 in the United States and 217 in Canada.
GM said the issue could allow the rear hatch to separate from the vehicle in a crash.
Dealers will replace both rear hatch hinges. GM notified dealers last month of its plan.
The issue was discovered in testing for a future European regulation.
GM is unaware of any crashes, injuries or customer complaints related to the issue.
Most of the models — about 4,000 — are 2011 vehicles. The hatch being replaced is from Milan Metal Systems LLC of Milan.
Letters to customers will be mailed Oct. 14 with instructions on how to have their vehicle repaired

Called dealer today to schedule...anyone know what the deal is??? I mean was it a bad parts bin or what??? In addition, wonder what horrible carnage occurred for GM to launch a recall...In addition, any clue as to how long the repair is???
Thanks all!

CPTAHAB,
This is just a preemptive safety measure. As the article previously stated "GM is unaware of any crashes, injuries or customer complaints related to the issue" We consider safety to be of the highest priority. In regards to your inquiry about the time frame of the repair. That's going to be subjective to the dealership. If you have any further questions, comment or concerns don't hesitate to ask.

I know you’re probably not authorized to discuss this, but I’ll ask anyway.
Do you know if GM recently changed the rear hatch hinges that have been used on the C6 for years or has “49 CFR 571.206 - Standard No. 206; Door locks and door retention components” been revised, thus causing the hinges that have been used for years to not meet the revised standard?

Issue is metal used; not hinge or design
'G.M. investigated and found the defective hinges all came from a single roll of heat-treated steel.” The recall began on Oct. 7. GM will contact Corvette owners

Seeing that my 2012 was built in August, it is most likely involved.
I’m sure I’m not the only one interested in the “story” behind this recall.

Anybody going to do it?
Are any of you affected by the recall going to have the work done? I'm worried that something will get screwed up in the fix and I'll wish I had never brought it in. If my Vette is ever in an accident I won't keep it anyway. I'm not sure I want to trouble trouble till trouble troubles me!
