Fuel Gauge malfunction

Fuel Gauge malfunction
Hello,
new to the forums here, I just bought my 2008 C6, Z51 yesterday!!
FIRST PROBLEM!!
the gas gauge was working fine all day yesterday. I went to fill up today and filled up with the engine running ( I know bad habit!)
When I topped it off I got an error message to check the fuel management system and the GAUGE WAS ON EMPTY WHEN THE TANK WAS FULL! It was not the gas cap error!
So the car was running fine and I drove off about 1/8 of a tank and the gauge started functioning fine and the warning went away. I disconnected the battery terminal and I got the CE light to go out too.
Here is another fact - I dont know how long the car sat at the dealer, I know they had it for 4 months.
I am not sure how the sender or sensor is constructed in the tank on these things.
Can someone offer some insight? Is this a common problem? Could there have been some "varnish" on the sender or something from not being filled up for a really long time??
I am just trying to think outside the box and eliminate all possibilities before I spend the cash to have it looked at.
Thanks
Jim

If you fuel with the engine running, you have a high probility of setting a check engine light.
Turn the car off while fueling.
When running, the car pulls a partial vacumn in the fuel tank. If it can't get this vacumn, which it can't with the cap off, it sets the check engine light. So, don't run the engine while fueling, and it won't set the error.

Thanks for replies and ridicule!
I just really need to know if what I did will cause the malfunction that I had.
I would have thought I would have received the "GAS CAP" warning. Not a empty read condition and not "Service Fuel Management system".
I want to get it to the shop if I have a problem.
When we fuel our police cars at work (chevys) we get the "Gas Cap" warning all the time. Guys will fuel while running but they walk away and bull crap forever with the gas cap off and engine running. They never get this kind of condition.
I accept what I did is wrong but I think there is another problem. This seemed extreme for fueling with the engine running.
Thanks

As stated, do not fill these (or any car) with the engine running.
As to the varnish question, since my car does not always get driven, I never let it sit close to empty to ensure the pump, etc, do not sit exposed where they can build up evap deposits.
I recommend a bottle of Techron if you are concerned about deposits. Its the only additive I would ever put in a gas tank.

Try this in a tank, it may need two applications, if this doesn't fix the issue replace the sending unit
GM Fuel System Treatment, part number
12345104 (United States) or part number 89020804 (Canada)

I'm surprised you didn't get a side full of gas. When mine stops filling, that's it. If I try to add any more, I get gas all over the side of the car.
I agree with all of the above. Stop filling with the car running. Try either the Chevron Techtron or GM's. After that, you should be good to go. Good Luck

Try unhooking the battery for 20 minutes. Chances are nothing is wrong with your fuel system because these are the exact symptoms people have experienced when they filled up with the car running.

All recommendations made above are good ones. If it makes you feel any better this has been addressed/experienced by others on this forum. You may wish to do a search on ths topic and you will see similar suggestions as well as more comments that will assist you in correcting/preventing it in the future. Note: in your search you may also run accross the picture someone attached which shows the fuel cells (plural!) in the C-6. It is not your fathers simple gas tank of old;
it is rather complex.

it's a dual fuel-tank system with a connecting hose...
also need to fill the tank slowly (with the engine off !).
when the gas pump shuts off, everything is full.
also, when putting the gas cap back on, just turn it 3 or 4 clicks, but do not push down on it too hard...

Thanks again all I really really appreciate this. I just talked to the dealer/place of purchase. They too want me to run a cleaner. If it does not fix it.... They are going to do a courtesy repair.
Awesome.

All the op's have given you good information. Follow it. I won't flog you for your poor decision to leave the engine running. I don't see where you have a problem of any kind. You said after about an1/8 tank everything cleared up. You're now good to go. If it makes you feel better run some cleaner through it.

Thanks flog.. I picked up some techron today. Going to give that a try then take it to the dealer for repair if it needs it. Im glad the dealer is doing the stand up thing if they need to.

Corvettes don't have a "Gas Cap" warning message but they do have a "Service Fuel Management System" message that appears when the gas cap is not on and the engine is running. Stop fueling the vehicle when its running and I bet you fix the problem.
Modern cars are not meant to be fueled when running. With the Corvettes dual tanks I'm sure you freaked out the computer and it didn't know how to handle the fuel level RISING while running. Again, don't fuel it while it's running and you probably won't see any more issues.

Thank you Brent . I would rather a chevy dealer take care of it though. Do you think a local chevy dealer would approve of this repair? I am just out of warranty. 36,850 miles!
