Default Grand Sport NPP

I have an 08 M6 coupe. I do not have NPP. I want to add a dual mode exhaust (really just the mufflers themselves, not the manifolds, X/H pipe, etc, so I was thinking of trying to do as some have done and add Z06 muffs. But it sounds like there is some welding and fabricating involved to do that?

I may be able to get the NPP mufflers off of a 2010 Grand Sport. Does anyone know if these will be a direct bolt-on? The mufflers come with the over-the-axle pipes, if that helps. Would there be any welding?

Thanks in advance.

You need to stay with 08 NPP for a direct bolt on installation for your 2008 C6. 2009 and later have a design change.

"NPP mufflers" usually means the overaxle pipes, mufflers, valves and tips since they are a one piece assembly from the factory.

'10 NPP will not bolt on to an '08. If you can get the '10 mid-pipe with the '10 mufflers then they will bolt on.

That is true. You have a couple of considerations with Z06 mufflers:
  1. They aren't as loud as NPP mufflers until you cut them open and modify them.
  2. The pipe sizes are different so they aren't a direct bolt-in without some reducers and/or welding.

See THIS thread for a related discussion of Z06 mufflers.

As others have pointed out, these are NOT a direct bolt-in. The muffler pipes on 2009-2011 C6s have a slightly different bend on the passenger side than the 2005-2008 cars have. If you just try to swap NPPs from a 2009 or later C6 onto your car, they won't fit.

2009-2011 NPPs will fit your car IF you also swap the factory mid-pipe from the 2009-2011 along with the mufflers.

So the easiest thing for you to do would be to find a set of 2008 NPP mufflers as these will fit without any issues, and you can do everything in your driveway with hand tools. The problem for you is that 2009-up NPPs are more plentiful. You can still go that route (2009-up NPP) as long as you get the mid-pipe pipe with the NPPs.

And remember you will need to purchase the electronic box to control the vacuum source to the mufflers (something like "NPP in a Box" or similar product). Not a big deal...but it's another $175 you'll have to spend. Or just go look on eBay right now where someone is selling a pair of '08 NPP mufflers with the NPP in a box...

Could OP reuse his own passenger side overaxle pipe from the '08 on the '10 NPPs and keep his mid pipe? I have no idea if the muffler inlets are in the same place or not.

I'm sure a muffler shop or someone skilled with a welder could make that work. But if I was the OP, I'd take the easy way out and look for something that directly bolts in place with no need for cutting, welding, etc.

I'm getting ready myself to bolt in a set of NPPs in my '09 that I got from a 2010 GS.

Top Fuel--

Thanks--just the kind of advice and info I was looking for. eBay may be the way to go, though I was hoping to go a little cheaper w/ the Z06 cans. The direct bolt-on course of action would sure by nice, just for the simplicity. Maybe cost too, in the long run, since I can't do my own welding or fabricating.

Thanks!

Here's another thought, we know that '09+ cars can't use '08 muffs, but what about the other way around? If memory serves, the change was the bend in the over axle pipe to clear something w/ the diff. Also, it seems odd that they would also change the mid pipe design to accommodate that change, since they could just design the '09+ to meet up w/ the existing mid pipe. So the question is, HAS anybody used a newer design NPP on an older style diff equipped car? I know at first the '09 guys were finding out that the '08 pipes wouldn't work, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't work the other way around if the clearances were in fact bigger for the '09+ pipes.

Keep your eyes peeled in the C6 Parts For Sale section. Best bet would be to score a used '08 NPP - that would be a direct bolt on. They turn up from time to time for around $1000, give or take. Plus - keep in mind you will also have to buy the "NPP in a box" from one of the forum vendors (about $160?) to make the NPP system functional - this includes the electrical and vacuum bits and remote controller. I upgraded my '06 with an '08 NPP system a couple years ago and this is a real slick mod...

Just putting on a Corsa sport might be an easier solution. Course if you're trying not to spend much as it appears, that probably won't work.

I can certainly help you out with the 08 NPP kit with the kit to also install it. Send me an email or give me a call and I'll be happy to help you out.
