Grand Sport motor getting replaced - <3K miles
Check engine light came on when I had it at work 2 weeks ago, when starting it up to head home. I made an appointment with Loehmann's Blasius Chevrolet in Waterbury, CT to get the problem checked. Called today to get an update, as I dropped it off Tuesday (called Wednesday and they said it was nothing to do electronically with fuel, air or spark and needed more time with it), and sure enough the old motor is out, new one has been ordered. They did not get into specifics, but I assume they will be sending back the old one to get broken down and inspected.
I drove the car to FL from Bowling Green and then up here to CT the week of Thanksgiving. Broke it in properly and didn't go over 3000 rpm for the first 1000 miles. Since the weather up here stinks at the moment anyways, I am curious to know what the outcome will be and why the first one went.
What actions would you guys take in this situation?

Corvettes are crap! Should have bought a Porsche!
IMO - not much you can do. If I were in your shoes I'd take the new motor and go on with life. Keep good documentation of everything for the next owner/historical reasons.
Some may say you could sue for the devaluing of the car, but... think it would be a slim chance and I don't honestly feel it would really devalue the car much if the car came with proper documentation of everything that happened.

Certainly an unfortunate situation but GM is taking care of it as they're supposed to under warranty. Just save all documentation, make sure the dealer stamps the proper VIN ID in the new block and no value lost, factory engine for factory engine. Keep the faith, all will be good again and let us know the story on the original engine.

Whatever, unlike some I would not make a big deal of it for a new car.

S#%t happens. Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but as long as it comes back fixed without any damage caused by the work, be satisfied. Not worth getting all worked up about. "Matching numbers" will not be an issue for at least 30 years.

Melting Slicks
I don't think anyone would really like it,especially on a new Corvette but last year at Christmas my HHR SS engine let go!One of the pistons melted.I didn't get a new engine.Just one new piston and all new rings.
How does it run now.Just ask a friend with 383 stroker in a 69 Z28!

Only if it has a dry sump which only comes on a 6 speed manual transmission coupe. Other Grand Sports have the same wet sump LS3's found in the non GS basecars.

Yea didn't think there is much to do because of the fact that the entire motor assembly is being replaced. I think the service guy was expecting me to be freaking out, but I was calm about the situation. I just told him to have the guys take their time as I am in no rush because of the weather here.

So, this was one of the Wixom motors that are hand assembled. Maybe the "normal" motor is just as good? I never have figured out what the big deal was over hand assembled. More room for human error maybe, or just bad luck. In any event I hope you get a great new motor and it all works out OK

This is what I was talking about with the dealer stamping the new engine block:

More likely just a failed/bad part rather than someone making a mistake during assembly.

You know this "hand assembled" thing has had me wanting to ask a question for awhile now (or make a statement) - ALL engines are "hand assembled"!! Do you guys think there is a robot out there putting these non-Wixom engines together cause that sure as heck is not happening. The Wixom engines are fully assembled by "one person" vs going down a production line where several people may be involved, but they are all "hand assembled".
More likely just a failed/bad part rather than someone making a mistake during assembly.

sorry to hear of your problem but atleast it doesn't sound like you will be missing out on driving time. glad to see GM and dealer step up immediately with a new motor. would like to hear what the issue was with the original mill that caused the replacement. it will be as good as new again so get it installed and enjoy the ride!
