Letter from GM re 05 C6 fuel cap
Sorry if this has been posted before but received today a letter from GM stating that the some 05's may experience a condition where the fuel tank filler cap won't tighten properly or the cap won't come off, or is broken. These conditions may also cause the illumination of the malfunction indicator light. Also that one should be aware that the fuel tank filler cap may not seal adequately to the filler neck if pushed down when being tightened, so don't apply a downward force to the fule cap when tightening.
Do not take the vehicle to the dealer, unless you believe that you have this condition. If so, they will put it right They will provide additional protection if this condition occurs within 10 years or 120,000 miles.
Also if you have paid money to have this condition corrected, GM will reimburse you.................................I would expect other 05 owners to receive this letter shortly...........
I have never had this problem.....anyone else have?

Yep, I got the letter myself today. I got a 'check gas cap warning' once a couple years ago. Someone else suggested I screw the cap on as 'loosely' as possible...which I've done ever since. I've never seen the check gas cap warning again. I did buy a spare gas cap which I still have unopened...maybe GM will reimburse me for the $9.00 gas cap.

My 05 started acting up now with the fuel cap. I unhooked the battery and hooked it up again and the display states something like check fuel cap. I press reset and it goes away for a few minutes then comes back on again. This happened last year one time too. I think it is time to go to the dealership. I only have 13,600 miles on the car and hate taking it to the dealership for repairs since the recalls on my previous steering column lock-up on my 97 and my 98 were not covered under recalls. GM always blamed it on something else. Go figure.

I took my car to the local GM dealer and will let you know how I came out. I gave them a copy of the letter stating it was a problematic condition to many many GM vehicles and we will see if it is covered by the dealership or GM as it should be.

Our local dealership (Billion Motors) did the diagnostic check and found out I needed a new fuel cap. They replaced it for free and I was in and out in a couple of hours. I am very happy with their service.

I am on my 4th gas cap for my '06 and guess what - it's started acting up over this past weekend. The problem is keeping it sealed since it continually backs off on it's own. It's my understanding that this should be covered under the SMOG warranty.
Wow...GM is allowing 1.8 hrs for replacing a gas cap on a Corvette. How hard can it be to snip off the back of the existing cap anchor and then push in the new cap anchor pushpin?

Got an '06. Yeah gas cap sucks.
Trick is to pull it out as you are twisting it CW.
It never feelks like a good seal but that's what works...
P.S. GM has apparently put their most junior engineers
on the projects where the customers 1st "feel" the vehicles.
ERGO--- gas caps, seat belts, steering, door slams, etc.
I f'n hate ALL junior engineers at GM - you guys are idiots...
Try buses for your career please

I've had my cap replaced and it's totally useless. It might as well be for a lawnmower. It backs off the filler neck.
I thought I read that GM was replacing the filler neck on some Vettes? Is this correct?
