At What Point Would you NOT Buy a Corvette? Too many miles?
I've been looking at several C5s lately, and even a few FRCs, for those who think I hate them.
The problem is that many have a lot of miles. Basically, 80,000 to 100,000 seem to be very common and I'm not really upset with that. I know the engine is good to 200,000 miles easily if you aren't abusing it. See the How Many Miles thread.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...o-on-a-c5.html
But the How many miles on your automatic thread does bother me.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-g...-replaced.html
But I have been seeing more at 125,000 miles and 150,000 miles and 175,000 miles than ever before.
The problem comes out twofold: mechanical issues and return on price if you sell.
I mean, I don't want to pay too much on a 175,000 mile car and then find I can't give it away two years from now.
Where do any of you draw the line?

I bought my 02 A4 coupe with 93k miles and did not think twice about it.
It was a steal of a deal. The car had all the common C5 problems when I bought it, but I knew it would not take much to get them all addressed. $825.00 later the car is as good as new.
Then the modding began, the car looks practically like new now, and I still have less than $ 15k in it and that includes the mods so far.

Depends... I've looked at LOTS of Corvettes while looking for my 2 Z06s, my dad's Vert and a few of my friend's Corvettes. I'm rather good at inspecting them. But every Vette is different. They all have their weird quirks, but it just depends on what you can live with and what is an easy fix. I check codes, go over the frame and grounding contacts, listen for loose suspension, check over the engine with a fine-tooth comb, check that the AC blows both hot and cold on both sides the right way, etc... There's a lot to check. But the things I check specifically are the difficult or expensive things to fix.
Someday I'll write a detailed write-up on properly inspecting a Corvette for purchase.
However, I don't go off mileage. LSx motors are meant to last. You can tell right away from the sound of the engine if it's been maintained well. You can also tell by smell if someone's poured restore or something of that sort into the oil fill. If the car has been maintained properly, mileage doesn't matter.

I bought a C4 94 3 yrs ago for 10K. It had 83000 on it. I did a few mods, was **** about 3-5000 mile oil changes, kept it spotless, drove it every day. Sold it 3 weeks ago with 130000 miles for the sam 10K and bought a C6 05 with 90000. 99% of Vette owners take care of their cars, whether garage queens, daily drivers or in between. This 05 has all the options and I'm ok with spending 23K on it. Hell, even GM contacted me about helping out with a few problems....blew me away!
The moral of the story is how bad do you want one, what do you expect for your money, and what are you gonna do with it? Be smart. Inspect it, drive it, inspect it again, then decide. You'll find a nice one of any generation....a Vette is a Vette is a Vette. Buy one ans drive the hell out of it. ENjoy it. We work too damn hard to get. The first one, bur it gets easier after that! Call me. 901 240 4492 Memphis TN Vettecop29. We compare notes over a beer! Do what makes you happy. Its an adrenaline rush after a tough night in a dirtt, violent hood, where lately we're taking fire from automatic seapons with 13 year olds. I love you guys, all of you, you bring smiles to my face, idea to my devious mind, and hope for OUR community of Corvette, best friends I have. A man can't have two many friends, can he? After solving the problems temporarily in the hood, calming a mental patient off his meds with a gun, my baby daddy hit me again, but I luuuuvvv him. I really NEED a nice loud ride at an average of 88-94 mpg with my 6 disc Bose blaring Journey, George Strait, Zeppelin, ZZ Top..
Look, I just work 7 days straight in North Memphis with a 24 y/o rookie, watching them, watching him, watching them more. My police mechanic is a true motorhead. Does miracles with Crown Vics with 200K miles to keep em running, same with these cheap *** Charge Interceptors with 160000 miles on a 2006. Hemi my a®¥.
Buy a nice Corvette and drive it, son, its worth the looks, the feel and the pride.

I would trust a vette with 120,00 miles more than I would a regular car (Lumina, Impala, etc..). As stated earlier, vette owners typically take good care of their cars.

I bought my 99 FRC, for daily driver service, with 115k miles on it. 4½ years later it now has 230k miles. If you are going to put a lot of miles on one like I doing, then it makes sense to buy one with >100k miles on it so you don't take a big hit on value. I'm sure my car has lost $3k to $4k value, but I don't care. I bought it and mod'd it to use.

I'd probably draw the line at around 75K on the car - not that one with more wouldn't be a good deal but I just like the lower mileage cars.

I would be a bit more reserved here in England. UK mileage is a tad harder than in the US. A 100k car here is getting on in its life. In the US I'd have taken a 100k car, at the right price, without worrying too much.

My FRC has 113k on it now and still runs and looks like new. However, it is well taken car of, with the fluids properly changed at the recommended intervals. I have done a couple updates to it as well with C6 seats, C6Z shocks, and a few other things, but I don't see why it wouldn't take another 100+K miles. I wouldn't be worried about buying one with any mileage, as long as it was properly maintained. I have seen some 30k mile examples that were completely ragged out. JMHO

You can also tell by smell if someone's poured restore or something of that sort into the oil fill. If the car has been maintained properly, mileage doesn't matter.

It all depends on how it was maintained and stored, you could have a 100,000+ car that runs better than one with 10,000 just because it was taken care of and regular maintenance was done.

You can have a car driven hard with 50K on it or you can have a car with 100K lady driven, depends on the previous owner.

I would not buy a car with over 30K miles on it.. I don't like worn seats, pedals, worn carpet and mats, the tired feeling and noises that goes with a high mileage car. I am not trying to put anyone down, I just like my stuff perfect. It usually does not cost that much more to find a low mileage car.
