Default Thinking of a long ride in your Corvette

Hi ,

My name is Jack and I post in the C2 section of this forum.

This summer I took my 1966 L79 Roadster (Orginial Drive Train, Motor) on a 48 state trip by myself.

Covering 19,238 miles in 89 days from August 2, 2010 to October 29 , 2010

I believe that I am the only man or woman to have driven a C1 or C2 to all 48 lower states alone , and in one contiguous trip.

If you would like to follow me and the adventures I had , go to this post. It is a sticky on the top of the C2 section

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...tes-await.html

I hope you learn some things and most of all drive your car , it will love you for it

Jack

Hello Jack! I saw your earlier thread and I think it's great that your C2 was up to the task of such an extensive road trip. I think we sometimes want to baby these cars and never truly realize their full potential.

How did the C2 stand up? Any road damage or problems?

That is an awesome trip you made. Just shows you that the Corvette is a great car for a road trip. When I retire in three years, I hope to do a lot of traveling in my Vette.

Hay Jack, That is something we all think about, but never quite get around to do it. I'm planning on it soon, as soon as the winter is over and the roads are open and clear going through the mountains. But you are my hero, I was talking to a friend about doing something like this, and he said something that stuck with me, He said " If you don't do in this life, which one are you going to do it ?"

Jack,

An absolutely one time in a lifetime opportunity and objective.

We have enjoyed your 'blog' and postings here on CF.

One question - you indicated 'camping' at some locations. How did you do this since there appears to be a minimum of camping materials in the pictures of the 'loaded up, ready to travel' pictures of the Vette?

Thanks for posting the link, Jack. I enjoyed reading through your blog. What an awesome adventure. Great stories and beautifil pictures. The longest trip that I have taken in my C5 was from NY to SW Florida with my wife(approx 1,400 miles each way) but that's nothing compared to your trip. I see you made it to Long Island and stopped at Captree, not too far from me. Captree Park is a popular meeting spot for car guys every Sunday morning except in the summer where it moves a few miles west to Oak Beach. Every Sunday that enormous parking area fills up with every type of car you can think of and becomes a giant car show. There are always a lot of Corvettes.
You have a beautiful '66 Roadster.

Great story Jack, and thanks for sharing it. I've been to all the lower 48 except Missouri, just not in my 'vette. Definitely a bucket list item. I drive mine every chance I get.

My tent went into the spare tire carrier, along with sleeping bag and stove. All you see fit into car.

I also had a blow up air mattress that I plugged into my lighter to fill up. I had a 50' extension cord to reach my tent from car.

Cool trip. A friend and I did a San Deigo to Pittsburgh in my 92 6spd last April. We went down one of the few that I thought you would have. I-15 through Utah and I-70 on through to Denver. That road is AMAZING.

Either you way though, you got us beat by a long shot. Only thing I'm curious about is.....how much did the trip cost? Did you tally it...haha.

My budget was $100 a day including , gas , repairs, food and lodging.

89 days cost about $8,500 You can see a breakdown in expenses on the last ten pages of the post. Dates of posts around Nov 5 2010

Total cost per mile for all expenses of car and trip was $ .28 per mile for the 19,238 miles

Hope this helps

Jack

camping at Big Sur $10 night for tent site

I drove mine 1500 miles south about 2.5 years ago 3000 mile round trip, and it was a blast to drive it down to Mexico. Yes yes, I drove the vette to Guanajuato, Mexico lol. I don't know that I will drive down now that the northern states of Mexico are having drug cartel wars though. I'm planning on taking a trip to California from Kansas for my 10 year high school reunion this June; and I am looking forward for the long drive in the Vette.

If you read a few pages of the post you will see a fuel pump problem, it was solved

A bad ujoint on halfshaft in WA , a forum member had a lift and we changed it out

A broken Alt. bracket, a small garage in rural Virginia fixed it for me for $39 including welding and installation.

car ran great, had it at 3,000 to 3,5000 rpms most of the time with my m-20 wide muncie and a 3.70 rear

15 to 17 mph at 65-80 the whole trip

I really like black C2's like yours a lot. There is one here in town, and I droll all over when I see it. Wait, I just saw your C2 better and it is green lol. I really like it either way.

How many nights did you camp versus stay in a hotel? Do you "carry" or were you "packin"?

This is pretty awesome....makes me want to do a smaller version again. Get my Z06 and just do 10 days of driving around in the midwest. I love Utah, Nevada and Colorado. I'd like to just drive out and explore. C5Z has LOTS of trunk space...lol...I could fit a house size tent.

I am incredibly jealous!!! It looks like you are having a blast and I hope that one day, I'll be able to do a trip such as yours. Last year my husband and I did a small version of this, but we only went through I think 8 states, and we had to do it all in 5 days!! You are a lucky, lucky man to have this opportunity! Stay safe out there and keep living the dream!

"My budget was $100 a day including , gas , repairs, food and lodging."

My wife and daughter took a summer long boating vacation in 2000. We also found it cost about $100.00 per day. We (wife and I) are looking to do it again in a few years when we retire. Can't seem to get the daughter back on the boat....

We would also would like to see the USA in our Chevrolet. Good to see the #s fit our budget.
