Default Place for Subwoofer - Proof of concept

Hi all. I don't know if this has been shown on here or not (probably has), but I installed a subwoofer under the jack track in the back of my '77. The only modification that I did was to remove the two "hooks" that were on the bottom of the tray and drill a couple of holes. I am not complete with the install yet, but I can tell you it works. I played it last night and there is plenty of bass, no rattles, and the Infinity BassLink Mini fits under the black tray without interference. I had it stuffed in there wrapped in neoprene and there were no rattles; at least not from the tray area. The brackets are no screwed into the unit but have a neoprene pad and are holding the sub in place. Long term rattling is yet to be seen. I was actually surprised that it did not rattle. I did make sure all of the screws for the cubby frame were accounted for and tight.

No problem closing the lid

No interference with the tray.

Sub in the bottom of the cubby. Obviously no jack is the downside to this installation.

Total system is a Kenwood single din receiver, Kicker KEY 200-4 amp located in center back cubby, Infinity 6.5" in the back, Infinity 4x6 in the dashpad, Infinity Basslink Mini in the jack tray. I would not say that it sounds like the Meridian system in the LR, but it does sound very good. A little boomy so I will be adding some sound deadner materials in the back.

Anyway, food for thought.

Cheers,
Brad

I was kinda thinking along the same lines. And I want to drive around going "THUMP THUMP THUMP" Why?
And then to not have a jack.

It’s not just about “Thump” its about rounding out the sound.

Dash and kick speakers cant product any real low sounds and leave it a little empty.

Brad, sounds like a great option. Were your tests on the road or the garage. Wonder how much bass you loose when moving.

Subwoofers shouldn't be stereotyped to boomy rap crap. I have a 10" Alpine sub in a homemade enclosure behind my seats. Led Zeppelin, Stones, Ozzie are more my cup of tea and they sound better with a sub. Stock radio and sound is a joke with dash speakers.

I have an Alpine system and my sub comes in a larger enclosure. I think its designed to fit under a rear seat. I have it on the floor in the rear and the amp mounted to the rear wall. I like that you can hide it in your tool, jack enclosure, I would have thought it would rattle and sound crappy due to the cheap plastic door surrounds. Very cool that it sounds good!!

I think I would buy an aftermarket battery door and cut it up to mound the sub in the lid. (My car already goes Thump Thump Thump and does not have a jack or spare). I too already have the amp mounted on the back wall and my back hurts just thinking of when I installed it. Maybe this summer I will try your mod

As others have said, it is not about boomy bass but about filling out the sound. If you ever have a chance to listen to a nice system with a sub and then turn that sub off, you will see a huge difference in any music type. I like about 3 thumping songs so when those come on, yes I will be thump thumping with a smile. The other 99.9% of the time its classic rock or country; both sound much better with a sub. I was also one who doesn't have a jack or a spare so there was nothing different in that department for me.

I have not tried it on the road yet as I am still installing the new interior (which is what started this whole thing). So it was in the garage with the t-tops off. I would guess it does lose some when driving.

I am very happy for now, but my worry is long term will the cubby start to rattle. I suppose I will tackle that if it comes.

To each his/her own. I can enjoy ZZ-Top just fine thru my stock Delco head, upgraded dash speakers, and added kick panel speakers. I like to hear the sounds....not FEEL them.

I understand why you did it. Subs do more than just make loud bass. For me, a car that I drive a lot has to have a decent sound system.

Hell my TA is all Kicker stuff. Components, tweeters, 6x9s and two 10" subs.

My ears can't hear much above 14,000 Hz anymore anyway.
Most 6" speakers die off around 100-200Hz. Small subs can go down to 40-50.
So a small sub just adds another octave down low where I can still hear it!

Good bass will also bring out some lower midrange sound. It adds so much to the tinney sound that a weak system produces. Kind of like old AM radios. If you get it right you can pick out fan drum sticks on a snare, wood blocks, xylophones and my favotite.....cow bell

This is exactly right......I like a lot of low for my music...almost none of it is rap/hip hop.....
I listen to a lot of Metal and Rock that hits hard.......needs a lot of bass to listen to properly.....
I like the subwoofer location idea.....I may try this.....

I like the idea. I hope it keeps working for you without rattling.

It's sad how judgey some people can be towards someone wanting an audio system that plays all the notes as intended by the artist and people mixing the music.

Totally agree. My three vehicles (including the Vette) all have audio systems which I've installed and built subwoofers for. And have a large sub for my home theater system. Without one, everything sounds like an old transistor radio.

I’d put a sub in every car I own if it were practical.

License plate rattling bass and a flat response curve from 20Hz - 20kHz are two drastically different concepts.

Some 6x9s, when properly configured, can make respectable bass down into the 50-100Hz range, but just can’t get as low as a sub can.

The first time I had a car with a “proper” sub (10” with a respectable box and something like 150W RMS feeding it), I couldn’t believe how much better my music sounded. You just need to ignore your friend who tells you to crank the sub up until you can really feel it. When a subwoofer is tuned properly, it shouldn’t stand out over any other speaker.

How are these 8” and smaller subwoofers working out for people with C3s? I’d like to reconfigure my system. I built a 6x9 speaker box a few years ago, but it’s taking up too much space - can’t store the tops in the car with it in place.

I have a luggage rack to stow the tops so I have room for a sub enclosure.

And a JL Audio amp above the jack storage.
