theres a metal plate with 4 bolts where the rubber grommet would be on the 78 vet. Do i take that plate off instead of punching out a grommet?

This happenned to me last year... Drive the car up onto a good set of ramps or get it up on jack stands.

Get under the car and peer up into the engine compartment. You will be able to see the cable in a few spots. Whats needed is to pull, or tug on the cable gently without ripping it out. With patience, and a fair amount of luck you should be able to release it.

I fashioned a tool out of a steel rod. It was about a foot and a half long, and I kinda made it into a hook at the end.

Hope this helps... let us know how you make out.

The 72 is the easiest car to open with a broken cable. Just pull the egg crate and reach up and trip the latch. Don't ask why I know this.

A few years back we had a small group from our vette club that went from southeast Idaho to Seattle to their car show. A guy had just put a new motor in his 73 a few weeks before and the second day over in Oregon his cable broke. We pulled it up on a curb and I reached up from the bottom and popped the latch. I have short arms and it was still easy to reach. He bought a choke cable from auto zone and repaired it.
