Default Code 31 Cam Position Sensor

I have the dreaded code 31 service engine light code in my 90 ZR-1. I have checked the battery, alternator, sensor connection, etc. Anything else to check other than changing out the camshaft position sensor? Also, where are these available? I can’t find them anywhere. Thanks!

Read on registry that someone had made a sensor from another engine work. Search on there!

maybe hit up mirrock too. They posted a ton of lt5 parts on eBay recently. Maybe they have the sensor.

https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail...SAAEgKBCPD_BwE] Hold on,I dont think that's a direct fit. There is a member on the ZR-1 Registry site that either modifies these Mouser parts to fit or finds them elsewhere. I'll have to go back and check that original post or amend it. I did get one and it looked like it would work but the O ring didn't fit.

Thanks for the heads up. Here is your original post and information on the modified cam position sensor.

I have a spare one that needs to be grooved for the oring. Hopefully I will never have to use it.

Thanks guys. I ordered one from Phil over on ZR-1.net. Messaged him last night and he is shipping it tomorrow. Hope it fixes the code and issue. If not it’s good to have a spare.

Hey guys. I just received a new cam position sensor from Phil. I got the old one out but WTH do you cram the new one in? It is not even close to squeezing in the hole. Is there a trick on getting it to slide in the hole? I have oil on the o ring, the hole is clean and smooth, and I have not even got it to start to go in by pushing it very hard. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

It should slide in. Have you put the two side by side to confirm they are the same size? Did you double check the hole in the cylinder head to make sure it's clean?

You may want to remove the inner fender well to get a better view.

Do you have access to a set of calipers or a 0-1" micrometer and measure each one? All's it takes is a few thousandths of an inch to not fit and you are not going to see that with your eyeball micrometer.

I oiled it up and wiggled it in. Still running rough and throwing the code 31. Phil said it may need a spacer washer to open the gap as the new sensor has a different pick up sensitivity. Will try to mess with it next week or just see if Marc Haibeck can take it soon. He is 30 minutes from me. Thanks.
