Default LS7 High Oil pressure when accel until warmed up

Hi folks,

Looking for some help. I am experiencing high oil pressure when driving or accelerating (even softly) until the car is 100% warmed up. This is new behaviour that started right after an oil change at the dealer. Once the car is completely warmed up the oil pressure regulated as expected.

Any thoughts on what could be going on?

The Car is a 2013 427 with 65,000Km (~40k M)

The bypass is in the oil filter. Maybe you got one that isn't opening like it should. Cheap as they are I'd swap it with a new one and see if the issue goes away

This may sound stupid but did the dealer put the right viscosity oil in your car? I would check your invoice to make sure they put in 5W-30?
My car runs 70ish PSI on start up and hangs on the 50's until my oil reaches 165*.

I would question the dealer. I switched from 5-30 to 0-40 and it does make a difference in the pressure reading on the gauge. Even after fully up to temp it's still a few psi higher than it was with the 5-30.

The M1 Euro 0W-40 no longer has the Dexos thing on it if that matters to you.

Back in the 2005-13 time frame when we were instructing corvette engineers and designers on track, most of us (instructors/trackrats) were using 15W50 which was great on track with the higher temps & higher rpms. But that was high for street so often we changed to it prior to track and then back to 5W30 or 0W30 for street. When the C7 first came out it had specific instructions for tracking the car including the 15W50 change. By time the 2015 model came out, 0W40 became the recommended fill for both street & track. It will give higher pressures when cold over 0W30 but I find that within a mile or so temps are high enough to bring the pressure down some.

Everyone offering solutions to problems we have no information on…classic

First let’s get this answered - What oil pressure do you have that you think is “high”? lol

It never did, too much Zinc and phosphorus in the Euro formula to qualify for Dexos standard going back 12-14 years at least.

Can use the new Mobil 0w40 ESP X3 for that - Dexos 2 approved.

I've been using Mobil 0w40 for about a year now (2 oil changes), no issues. I let my oil temp get to >150°F before I start getting on the throttle. You would really need to do a UOA to objectively determine if the oil was adequate or not....which I have not yet done.

Oil pressure in my '08 Z06 is always sky-high -- when cold. ~70 PSI.
Takes a few miles driving for oil to heat & viscosity becomes suitable for hard pulls.
Pressure normailzes to around 50 PSI from then on.
Been like this since I brought her home 16 yrs ago.

ZR1 here on 5W-30 and UPF48R, same thing. 60-70 psi until it has any temp in it depending on RPM. Runs down to the mid high 50s with more heat

Interesting thoughts on the viscosity. I had them redo the oil change and the result is the same.

Since I am Canadian the guage is not in PSI. I will use a percentage to explain. At full operating temp the pressure sits around 50% which you would expect. When warming up it sits at 80% under light driving and with any sort of throttle it can go to 100%. I actually had an instande where some oil actually pushed out through the dip stick at full throttle (I think). I took it back to the dealer afterwards and they said as was good. They thought they may have not seated the dip stick properly but I am not convinced.

Oil pressure has 0 to do with dipstick.

Your pressure sounds normal.

Sounds like normal to me. The dry sump oil system will peg out the oil pressure at start up and with very little throttle until the oil is fully warmed up.

Does the same thing in my M6 GS that has the same dry sump system as the LS7.

Most of us know how to use the metric system Your oil pressure situation sounds entirely normal, and I wonder if you had just forgotten over the winter how your car's oil pressure behaves. Excessive oil pressure won't blow out your dipstick, that would come from crankcase pressure, which would be an entirely different issue.

I think you're all set to go drive and enjoy your car

Check your oil level. Maybe they overfilled it.

dipstick? Omg, another useless service dept - learn to do your own changes

on the street i see over 90 psi at higher rpms on my 09 when "hot". 10-40 though and "hot" means 160ish or lower (especially in winter even with cooler wrapped up).

i dont think max pressure is detrimental in any way, might cost some (fractional?) hp, but thats rather academic. it will not make the dipstick come out, blowby will.
