Default 1967 L71 Convertible Clippinger Chevrolet 'Build per FSO'

Hi,

I own a 1967 Corvette Convertible with a L71 engine that was sold by Clippinger Chevrolet, Covina CA , (see NCRS Shipping Data Report).

The option list says 'Build per FSO' on the tank sheet:
  • 986 Silver Pearl paint
  • Standard black trim
  • L71 engine
  • No A/C
  • K66 Transistor ignition
  • G81 Positraction axle 3.55
  • M20 4-speed transmission
  • C07 Auxiliary hardtop
  • No radio
  • A01 Tinted glass
  • A31 Power windows
  • A85 Shoulder harness
  • F41 Special suspension
  • K19 Air injection reactor
  • N14 Side dual exhaust
It allegedly left Clippinger with American Racing Torq Thrust wheels and Goodyear Blue Streak tires and was occasionally raced by the first owner. The wheels are still on the car.

The car was bought by my father at Corvette Mike in 1983.

I understand that Bob Wingate at Clippinger Chevrolet was at that time the most successful Corvette salesperson in the US and might have used COPO/FSO to get cars fast tracked to him.

Other than that, what do you make out of this car and 'Build per FSO'?

Thanks,

Christian

FSO Factory special order
Selling dealers back then would install lots of day 2 items for you like A.R.E. wheels if you were willing to pay.
The data sheet from Corvette mike says 7" wheels which are a dicey fit fender lip clearance wise.
BEAUTIFUL car.

Does the car have six tail lights that Bob was most famous for.

I recall reading somewhere once that Wingate's famous personal Corvette, the green 67 coupe with 6 taillights, was also ordered on a "Factory Shop Order" with an M20 in place of the normal M21 close ratio. I think this was done because the Chevrolet Engineers said the wide ratio would provide better quarter mile times behind the L71, than the M21 would.

The COPO/FSO didn't get cars delivered quicker, it allowed for changes beyond regular production builds and options.

To Phil2302's comment, Wingate's green 67 coupe came from St Louis with 7" Torque Thrusts and the factory supposedly trimmed the inner lip on his car to provide extra clearance. It's quite possible that this was done to the OP's car, I guess?

Christian, Very cool car and I'm sure it attracts quite a crowd in Germany. I was wondering how you're preserving that amazing Tank Sheet. Larry

I cleaned the tank as best I could and glued a protective plastic over it, so the next owner hopefully can enjoy it.
