2013 Z06 - Service Charging System
Hey guys,
Got a weird one. My OE alternator was dropping voltage when hot due to the headers. Or suspected at least. I replaced it with a AC Delco alternator and the battery too (appropriate size). Alternator is charging at 14.3v which is good. It was fine for a few daysbut when leaving the shop yesterday I got a "Service Charging System" warning but no CEL. I turned around and pulled back into the shop. We scanned for codes and tested the voltage at the alternator and battery. Everything was good. Gauge showed 14.3ish the whole way home even sitting on the 520 bridge for almost an hour.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I drove the Rav4 into work today because I'm paranoid. I talked to a connection at a local Seattle dealer who will handle modified Corvettes (h/c/i/headers). I have an appointment for Friday but if I can troubleshoot before paying diag that would be great. The service advisor said we handled the obvious and it was a bit weird. He said it maybe a ground issue but obviously it has to be there to confirm. Also said it may be the computer but these symptoms were not present before replacing the alternator and battery.
My shop doesn't want to put it in the air. They just did me a simple favor for an easy repair.

Bad grounds are very common in our cars. I would google a wiring diagram and go over every ground and make sure they are all clean and connection is correct.

Check the wires at the starter solenoid to make sure they are tight and the solenoid post isn't heat damaged. There's a large ground on the engine block near there that should be checked, too.

GM won't sell you just the solenoid but the ones on Amazon work great.

It’s usually the voltage regulator they use in the replacement alts that don’t communicate properly with the ecu. Check to make sure that there are 3 pins in it as well as sometimes they give a cheaper one without the comm wire or move it to the wrong pin location.
