ruh roh... engine knocking
I just unloaded my Z off of a flat bed tow. Rolled her in the garage and will tow it to the dealer tomorrow.
I was driving along PCH and I accellerated fairly hard, not WOT and pulled away from my buddy. As I did so, he saw a puff of black smoke shoot out of my exhaust. When I decelerated, I heard a faint tapping noise from the engine. I pulled over and let it idle, the tapping became a knock and I shut her down.
Could it be a valve spring? If so, what can I expect in the way of related damage?

Hopefully yours is a simple fix.

After they replace the engine, make sure they refill the trans.
When the engine is out the trans cooler will lose a little trans fluid. It must be readded or the trans will fail on the first day out of the shop.
Tell them to write right on the repair order. Refill trans prior to restarting vehicle. Then talk to the tech and tell him personally to refill the trans after the engine has been out. You wouldn't believe how many dealers have botched that and screwed the trans on day 1 out of the shop.
Yes it's a simple fix. Remove old engine, install new engine.

A broken valve spring does NOT always require a new engine. I had it happen several times with my C5Z with C5R 427 in it and replacement of the valve spring was all that was needed. I believe it depends on where the broken piece(s) go!
However, at your mileage, if one broke, make sure they at least replace ALL of the valve springs.
Good luck!

Dealer told me it was in the #7 hole. They're gonna pull it apart and let me know what GM is gonna say.
I'm looking at my options real hard before moving forward with the repairs.
Hey! Cool thing is that I get a Chevy Equinox as a loaner to replace my $73,000 Corvette. Gee, thanks GM.
