Extra Paint Cost .. Why?
Some of the colors cost extra, like: Velocity Yellow Tintcoat, Monterey Red Metallic Tintcoat, etc.
1. Why do these cost more? More coats, last longer ..?
2. What is "Tintcoat?"

Tint coats have a base color coat, a transparent colored tint coat and a clearcoat. This technique gives extra depth and optical qualities to the paint compared to regular base coat/clearcoat. Requires painting the entire car at least one additional time, thus the added cost.

I still think it is a cash grab by GM. If you look at the mid-range MB and BMW you will notice they do not stick the customer with extra cost for a paint job. They charge more for metallic paint on the low end cars but no charge for other models.

I've also heard that this process to paint cars this way is called 3-stage paint, the process as described by drtli said in his comment above. You may be familiar with some caddy's and other high end cars with paint called White Pearl (or Pearl White, whichever?), well, that paint is the same process as what chevy is doing to some of these xtra paint option colors offered. So, you pay more for the extra work put into the paint application which is above and beyond the 2-stage process, otherwise called Base Coat, Clear Coat.

The paint and clear costs more than the regular colors. White diamond on the Caddy is a $1,200 option.

2. If you don't like it, there many other colors to choose from.
3. Chevrolet doesn't charge extra for the 400 HP as compared to the BMW with the weenie engine. BMW is ripping you off by charging more money for less motor.

I guess we could assume, then, that these paint jobs will last longer and be more protective?
By the way, I'm getting the yellow.

Just buy Black! Black is black and it looks great if you take care of it. No other color can shine like black when clean
P.S. The XM wart, door handles, headlights, and brake lights look like they belong on black.
No extra charge for Black.
In case you couldn't figure it out, I like BLACK!!!!!!!!!!

I was told by a BG worker that there are a few reasons - I don't know how true it is.
This guy says that it has to do with shut down (switching colors), cleanup of equipment, labor and paint composition and order popularity.(VY & MR are more expensive and LB not as much)
I have been told (by at least 5 or more at BG) that VR, BL, MS, and CSOM are the most widely ordered with VY, LB and white following in that order.
As an artist I can tell you that the high quality pigments that make vibrant yellows and deep red values in paint (acrylics, oils and watercolors are the same) are 3 or more times that of other colors (primary and mixer combinations). This could be the same in automotive paint.

I have a friend who works in a body shop and unfortunately I had to have my car fixed when someone backed into it at the post office. He explained the extra steps needed to match the Magnetic Red Metallic and it sounded to me like the extra cost was worth it. You can definitely tell the difference of a Mag Red vs say a Torch Red.
More work, more costly paint equals more cost to purchase.

I would think the downside to these 3 step paints would be the difficulty of doing a paint brush touch-up. Solid colors are easier to blend in than the metallics.
