I just finished "modding" my CHMSL with a brake light blinker from a reputable aftermarket company. The CHMSL blinks for about 1-2 seconds upon brake application then goes steady and looks normal. If you release and re-apply the brake within 10 seconds it works like stock (to not annoy anyone in stop and go traffic)...but if you apply the brake after 10 seconds or more, it blinks again.

Mercedes Benz just finished a study about that technology and found it increased inattentive driver reaction time by some amount. The blinking light gets your attention faster than just steady brake lights. Benz is now putting that tech into a few of it's '06 models.

Doc, are you still the keeper of the FAQ? If so, I could writeup a full set of instructions on this mod. Let me know if anyone is interested in this and I can give more detail.

The "chip" works on ANY car with a CHMSL and should help you from being rear-ended by a sleepy or cell phone driving idiot.

The Mercedes article that I read last week said: Safety Proven: "DaimlerChrysler will introduce flashing CHMBLs for 2006 on the Mercedes S-Class, followed by the CL-Class. Their studies showed that drivers react 0.2sec faster to a Flashing brake light compared to a normal one; which corresponds to a 15ft reduction in stopping distance from 50mph, or about one car-length advantage."

Below is the link to the company I bought my blinker from. About $35 bucks and pretty easy to install. They have a basic one that works in any car with a CHMSL and one specially made to clip right into a C5...no wiring required. I don't know if it would work on a C6.

The website has pretty good C6 directions, and the ones that come with the package are not bad either.

Basically here how it goes.

Remove two inner taillights.
Reach in and unclip the CHMSL power clip.
loosen and swing over the LEFT license plate light, run the removed clip and wires through that lights opening above the license plate.
Splice in the "chip" with provided wire nuts to the BLUE wire.
Splice the ground wire from the "chip" to the white Vette ground wire.
Test it out and seal back up.
Total time, first try, 1 hr.

works fine in the C6. There are specific C6 install instructions on his website also.

Here is the removal of the two inner tail lights (requires a Torx T10) and the red pointers show where the four threaded shafts are located and thus the four 10mm bolts you remove to release the CHMSL...my method is to remove the unit and work from there...

Here is the module connected...the package from webeletricproducts comes with wire nuts to complete the 'hot wire from the brake pedal' connection but I prefer to use crimp connectors (which requires a crimp tool which many do not have thus the supplied wire nuts)... also I placed the blue painters tape on the rear deck just to protect the paint..just being cautious>>



Important is to make sure when you place the module (instruction explain how) to install WIRES DOWN since the area between the rear fascia and the rear bulk head can get wet/damp and you want any water being directed away from wires going into the module.

Very easy to install and it very much makes the car more noticable when braking

Additional information for installing the (?generic?) BLP module into a C6 Corvette from the website:

1. Remove both inner taillights. The single mounting screw is a Torx, but an allen wrench will work, as they are only hand tight.

2. Remove the four mounting nuts on the center brake light (CHMBL). 10mm.

3. Reach in an unclip the CBL power connector from the center of the CBL.

4. Pull the CHMBL clear of the car.

5. Using the same allen wrench as above, remove the inner screw from the left side license plate light. Then, just loosen the outer screw (no need to remove it) and swing the light clear of the hole. Note - using the left light will give you more slack than using the other side.

6. Use the access hole you just created to run the CHMBL power connector outside the car. This makes it very easy to do your connection work.

7. In my case (YMMV), the blue wire was the power lead and the black wire was the ground.

8. Reinstall the plug to center tail light.

9. Test your work when you have completed the connection.

10. Reinstall in reverse order when done.

I received Webelectricproduts' CHMSL blinker, he now has it prewired to plug right in...took approx. a minute for the install, unbelievably simple, works great.
