original shifter mod for T56 Viper tranny
Hi
Today, I finished the modification, adaptation and installation of the original shifter ( T-handle ) to the T56 Viper tranny in my 68 BB .
This shows the tranny up in position with the tunnel cur open to the right hand side.
Now with the original lower rubber boot installed ( I used the old one )
and fiberglassed the original cutout close ( except for a slot in order to pass the trannys offset shifter in case I need to drop the tranny.
Now with the console in position.
now with the T56 6 speed shifter that came with the tranny. You can see that this being the neutral position, it could not shift into 1st gear as too far to the left and also tilted too much forwrad.
more pics on next post.

Hi
More pics
I fabbed a temporary adapter + stick in order to find the best position and angle for the shifter.
with console installed. You can now see that in neutral position, it sits much better.
Now I fabbed the adapter bracket and welded the original T-shifter stick to it as copied by the temporary one .
The lower side shows reinforcement angles that also grip onto the tranny's offset shifter. A 12 mm bolt holds all to the offset shifter.
and from top view, the shifter is about 3/4 " further to the right and slightly more aft and of course tilted much further back regading the T56 shifter stick that came with the tranny.

Hi
and the last pics
Here the original shifter + adaptor plate mounted to the offset shifter in neutral position.
same in 1st gear position. Now has enough space to the console.
and in reverse gear.
Any more pics required ?

Looks good, Gunther. One suggestion. You should open up the hole in the tunnel a little more so you can access all 4 bolts and remove the shifter assembly from the top.

Hi
Good idea, but I can open it up easily when required.
The old lower rubber shifter boot is attached with clip nuts, if this is of any interest.
There is an other tight fit to this T56 and this is the gap the tranny's offset shifter has to the bottom ( in 1st gear is the lowest position and just touches the tunnel ) and in reverse gear it just makes it to the top console upper shifter boot lip.
The tranny has only one ( 1 ) specific position where it sits best and I am talking about +- 1/4 " or less .
I also realised that the tranny is slightly turned counterclockwise ( looking from back to front of car ) in relation to the bellhousing/engine combo. This is done through the tranny adaptor plate and possibly ment to be like this in order to clear the tranny's shifter outlet from the tunnel right hand whall.
