Default High tranny temps on ECS car

FI guys, I am running an ECS s/c kit and a tranny cooler in the passenger side of the bumper on my ´00 A4 vert.

I have already opened up the shrouds around the fog lights (“Z06 air intake mod”) and cut louvers in the passenger side fender well to let the warm air escape.

However, I am still running tranny oil temperatures of 250-260°F when I push it. Outside temps is a humble 77°-82°. Any ideas how I can bring down temps?

A fan – IMHO – would not do the job because I guess you just can´t get more air into the car than forcing it in by going fast. Any experience with relocating the cooler on the rear axle?

I dont like installing the vented rocker panels to mount the cooler in front of the rear wheels or cutting the front license plate holder, either.

How do you control your temps? Pics would be great, too.

Are you running the largest cooler that you can squeeze in the nose?
You can fit a (9x11in I believe) cooler by relocating the horn...

Imo, the 9in fan (B&M w/fan) on my cooler does help as the stat turns on the fan around 176*..... this helps control heat soak in low speed/traffic situations... also make sure that you`re allowing enough air to exit via the fenderwell.

I needed to drill out a large area of the fenderwell before I could get enough air out which DID keep temps in check..

Good luck!

PS I almost forgot....I run an B&M deep pan also..4qt I think!

Hi, here's what I did to help solve over heating trans fluid a4 tranny and eng coolant...

1. installed dewits rad,2.stall fans,3.opened up fog l. bezels,4.installed
B&M maxi trans cooler part# 70297 w/fan(located it behind front drivers side wheel (there's an area there)drilled multiple holes into face of enclosure directly behind wheel and screened holes in..air escapes out through left fender side vent(also screened)

Temps used to rise above 240..as high as 260deg(trans fluid )now about 200 deg. until outside temps get above 88f then temp increases
to that end, am installing another B&M trans cooler(24,000) back by tranny..that should take care of everything...hopefully. stock 346ci. twin inter coolers,8.5lbs boost,641rwhp/553ftlbs torque @6200...rpm stage5,vigilante 2600stall,3:42 gears etc...steel tubing to both tranny coolers...sorry, no pics...hope this helps...Renee

We always use the coolers with a fan mounted on them, placed where you have it, and we never have a problem. Just be sure that you do not have a trans problem in the first place. You could have a convertor starting to go which can cause that.

Thanks guys, I will check on larger cooler and maybe fan.

You think this vents are large enough for the air to exit to the fenderwell?

Definately go with the fan, that area does not have enough air flow on it's own to be effective. (same reason why twin intercooler set ups did not work well) it will make all the difference for you. There are several companies that sell them with a temp sending unit already mounted in it, just hook up power to it and your done.

I installed this one on my Vette - I bypassed the factory lines going into the radiator and went straight to the Cooler - 22" x 8" x 1 1/4" I "DO NOT" see temps over 163* on a 96* day. (That was at a standstill once I went on the road and started moving it went down to 149*)
http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/4739-1.html

I installed it after I did the front license plate mod, it spans that area and over to the opened up Fog Light are (Z06 Screens there) It gets nothing but cool air right through it

Here is a couple of pics, I used the 3/8" Inverted flare fitting to to barbed to the cooler:

I need to get some better shots from underneath the Vette so when I do I will then do a write up

Thanks,Matt

Hi cliff . How is the extra airflow helping with trans temps... We could still run a fresh air hose from the front inner fenderwell to the cooler area... Just havent got the plans back from the engineering dept.(ME) yet!!!!

It looks like you have a header style cooler from the pics. If you change to a plate style I dont think you will need a fan, even with a smaller cooler.
If you hevent already check and make sure your convertor is locking.

The cooler is not yet cooling well enough. Yes, I would like more ventilation!
