Default 71 Corvette Horn

I have a 71 Corvette with a missing horn. I found the connector and tested it with a volt meter and have voltage when the horn is depressed. I have checked everywhere I know to check and can't really tell where the horn is mounted. Can anyone tell me where the horn should be mounted and did the 71 come with one or two horns? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My 71' is in the same place. I think one horn was standard, and two optional but I couldn't find any documentation of that.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like your support must have a nut welded on the inside and you just screw a bolt into it. Mine does not have that and the wiring will not reach there. I could extend the wiring but without a nut to bolt it to there is nothing to hold it. I may just have to rig something up.

If you don't already have an AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) you should get one. They are available on CD or hardcopy from several vendors here. The AIM will show you the location.

I have the assembly instruction manual and it is very unclear where the horn is supposed to be mounted. That is why I posted here but thank you for the thought.

Horn installation is shown on page L250 of the A.I.M., UPC 12, Sheet A5.

I can't speak for a 71, but my 69 has TWO horns with two separate low and high tones, mounted at the header panel. Just left and right of the centerline.

Thanks for your replies. I understand now where the horn goes but as I said earlier there is no weld nut there so I don't have anything to bolt a horn to and the connector won't reach that location. Maybe the support has been replaced somewhere along the way and this one is different but that doesn't explain the wiring. If there was a weld nut there then I could extend the wiring and put the horn there. I guess I will just have to mount it somewhere else. Thanks for all of the input.

One short piece of wire, one butt connector, one drilled hole and one nut/bolt/lockwasher will take care of your problem.

Thanks 7T1vette. You must not have this model of Corvette. If you did you would know that the support that the horn is supposed to mount to is enclosed and you can not put a nut on the back side of it. That is why there needs to be a nut welded on the inside. That way you can just screw a bolt into it and you are done.

There's not any way to get a nut welded to the inside of that structural member, so your best option would be to drill a hole in the right location, tack-weld a nut on the outside of the frame member and bolt it up there. To do it the 'factory way', you would have to take the whole front end apart and weld in a new cross-member that has that nut welded in properly. And I would doubt that the replacement frame members you can buy even have that nut welded in, anyway. Hope you can figure out how to do it.

Hi,
Just for info.... 68, 69, 70 cars had 2 horns, a high and low note, while 71, 72 cars had only one horn, a low note.
Regards,
Alan
