Default C8 anti-theft devices

Had some fellow club members venture to Memphis, Tennessee on a St Jude’s cruise. Long story short staying overnight cars were stolen and some vandalized. How can this happen with all the standard anti- theft devices and are there anything aftermarket products that can prevent someone stealing your car?

There's nothing you can do to stop a determined professional thief. If they really want your car, they'll get it, even if they have to back a tow truck up to it and haul it away. Can you do things to make it harder? Sure:

A battery disconnect will make it impossible to drive the car, but with the battery location on the C8 it will be a pain to use, unless you can figure out some way to operate it remotely. The Soler throttle controller has a "lock" setting you can control with your cell phone that completely disables the gas pedal. But if they can start the car (by cloning your keyfob, maybe) they can put it in neutral and tow it easily. An alarm system that alerts you remotely if your car is moved or opened while parked will at least give you a chance to interfere with the theft. But that could be a problem if the thieves are armed,

Comprehensive insurance is the best approach, I'm afraid.

Mistake #1 was Memphis...

The Soler Performance throttle controller is probably the best you can DIY with the C8.

We unfortunately ventured to East STL, where my sister lives (Air Force doc), for Thanksgiving and I added an immobilizer & alarm to my wife's Jeep. I could barely sleep knowing how easy those things are to steal from a hotel parking lot.

The C8 doesn't worry me as much in hotel parking lots...but I also won't take it to ESTL or Memphis 😉

This drives me nuts. Companies, all companies roll out technology that they can’t secure. Banks roll out automated phone based apps and services and fraud and theft goes through the roof. Auto manufacturers got rid of keys for fobs and signals and cars are easier than ever to steal. It’s beyond ridiculous…. I didn’t know about the solar ability to shut off the gas pedal but I also want to look into an old fashioned kill switch. You can’t kill all the power or you can’t lock or unlock the car but I need a kill switch that prevents the car from starting.

Even the in-car tracking that Onstar uses to follow us can be blocked with jammers which is how so many Hellcats disappear. Maddening… car theft should be minimum thirty years hard labor.

Memphis is a rough area for car theft… not a good place to have lots of expensive cars park outside over night. You honestly need to hire an over night police detail…. $50 a person would get you a cruiser parked with the cars overnight.

Oops. Reading the thread title: "anti-thrift devices", I thought the thread would be about the accelerator pedal.

Fixed by a Mod

So these were Corvettes that were stolen? If so, what years?

"Cars were stolen"..... how many cars were stolen? And from the same hotel? That sucks. And like someone else asked, what generation.

Did the hotel have any video surveillance?

So many questions so little info provided by the OP.

Find the nearest rent a car that will lock up your car. Get a economy car and use that.

Some would suggest that a Corvette is an anti-thrift device.

There is deterrent’s one can do to stop the common ways the modern thief can get away with your car that are cheap. Hardly anything can stop the tow truck method.

But the two common methods thieves use today to steal a modern car is signal intercepting/boosting and programming a blank fob.. Faraday bags help prevent theft via signal interception along with locking the car using the physical switch.

Installing an OBDII port lock can prevent the fob method. Will result in your windows being broken, but car still there.

https://vargasturbo.com/product/vtt-...-locking-tool/

Again all deterrents, but won’t stop a determined thief. All meant to make the thief move on to an easier target vs sticking around increasing the chances of getting caught trying to get around your deterrents.

Soler Performance Throttle Controller has a setting where you can lock the throttle and they cant take the car. Very nice and cheap fix for this

There was one C7 stolen and 5 other had driver windows broken. Onstar located and disabled the stolen car.
apparently, C7’s are easy to clone a blank key fob!!!

So is a C8.

Nothing tricky about it. Plug a computer into the OBDII port, program the blank key, and off they go. Hence the lock I posted above.

If you're travelling alone or in a small group this may not be practical. But for things like hot rod power tour and other events, where there are many people parking in the hotel parking lot, you organize a group of guys to take 2 hour shifts walking the parking lot at night. Where a hi-viz vest and let the hotel know you will have people patrolling the parking lot. As long as you are seen the thieves won't bother, thieves will not try and steal if someone is around as its too easy to identify them, especially now that everyone has a phone with video. If its a big parking lot you would want 2 guys per shift. Usually pretty easy to find volunteers for this as everyone wants to keep their cars secure.
