My combat engineer battalion was direct support to the 101 at Ft Campbell before they went to RVN and then we joined up again after both units first year of deployment

Quick update before I turn in for the night. Made it as far as Poplar Bluff, MO before calling it. Not as far as I had hoped to be but that 6+ hour delay in KC set me back. Still have about 500 miles to drive tomorrow to get home so that’s certainly doable.
The car is doing great, no further issues. Brakes are working as they should be now. Drove top down until sunset then put the top up for the rest of the night. Forgot to take pics in daylight so I’ll attached a few I took at a gas station in good lighting. Here’s the Mizzou sunset as I was crossing a bridge.
One other thing I noticed right away that I forgot to mention. It is clear to me that America’s love affair with cup holders did not start in 1961! And since this is a manual, you can’t hold your coffee and drive with one hand. Gonna have to sort this out later, if anyone has any product recommendations fire away. Hoping to find something small and discreet that stacks on the center tunnel between the seats. Gotta have my coffee man!
You won't have any trouble finding cup holders for your car. I have seen them over the years on the forum ,

Once you get comfortable with the driving, you can go faster...those old engines were designed to run well over 3000 rpm all day long.
I have to wonder about this statement, engines today can do that but those old engines certainly did not. Having worked a Chevy store in gthe 60's and 70's you rarely found an engine that lasted all day long at over 3000 rpm. Maybe it was the weather here in Ohio.
This is me with the previous owner and his lovely wife when I picked up the car Friday afternoon. Wonderful people, said they would pray for my safe journey back to GA. Me going down the road early in the trip. Yes I took a selfie while driving, forgive me. Finally, me toward the end of my day 1 journey feeling rather exhausted.
You did say you went to Colorado, last picture looks like it, Lol.

I'm curious about how you are parking at hotels. Are you parking the car up front near the entry/reception area? I know hotels all have signs which show they aren't responsible for damage. Glad its working out well for you. Guess you only have one more night anyway. Have fun..

They wore out quickly whether you revved them or not! Might as well drive it fast...if you look at how many miles most old cars get on them in a decade, they'll last forever if they last 50k miles.

First night I could have parked anywhere, the place was near empty. Last night the hotel was packed as was the parking lot, I was luck to find a spot with empties on either side. That was it fortunately, I’ll be home this evening!
Today was quite the adventure! I did not have time to post frequent updates, so instead of makimg one long post with all the details I’m going to post several smaller ones and do my best to recall the timeframe as well.
Glad to be home, in my own bed, with my wife by my side and my Vette in my garage. Stay tuned!
Had the alarm set for 6:30, woke up at 5:45. No point in rolling over for less than an hour so I got up and got ready. Gassing up before hitting the road I was able to squeeze 9.2 gallons in. The vette is supposed to have a 16 gallon tank but I have been unable to get more than 10 gallons even when the fuel gauge shows near empty.
The fuel gauge is a known liar according to the gentleman who sold me the car. He suggested filling up when the gauge shows a quarter tank.
And this was a pic I thought was gonna be bad *** and turned out to be meh. I was looking in the rear view and saw the road behind me disappearing on this beautiful sunny day and thought “I’ve gotta get a picture of that.” Well, see for yourself. Guess you had to be there.
Rest stop in Kentucky this morning. Needed a bio break and my wife tested that it was raining at home (in GA), so I took this pic and sent it to her. Clear and beautiful sunny skies.
Had to gas up again near Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell. Decided to grab some comfort food at the local Waffle House (aka The Aweful Waffle) and so glad I did. Ginny (yep, with a G) was my waitress and she was a very nice older lady. She was super polite and got the cook to actually burn my bacon (always ask for it cremated so they know what I mean, and still sometimes it comes back flimsy!). Left her a $20 tip and went on my way. About to cross into Tennessee!
Tennessee is where things got interesting. First there was then traffic going thru downtown Nashvegas. In a stick. Yikes. And by then it was hot as ***** (literally, mine were melting) so sitting still was no bueno.
Got thru Nashville and decided to stop for a bio break south of town. It was so hot and I felt myself getting sunburned despite the generously applied spf 100 (not a joke), I reluctantly decided to pull the top up and try out the AC. Once I figured it out the AC worked well enough that I didn’t sweat. Not enough to make the cabin chilly mind you, but enough that I wasn’t sticking to the seat so good enough for me!
But I could kind of hear and feel the compressor spitting and sputtering. It was almost pulsating. However, I knew the previous owner didn’t drive the car much so I chalked it up to a system that hadn’t been used much recently. More on that in a bit.
