Default Wheels and tires for 86 C4?

So I've been looking to purchase new tires for my 86 and have been having a hard time finding the stock rear tire size. So I'm thinking of maybe going with 19 inch wheels in the rear and 18 inch in the front and seems it will be easier to find tires to fit aftermarket wheels. My question is I've seen these size on 86 C4s but does anybody know if I will have to accommodate this idea or would it just be a plug and play type of situation? Any info on this would really help thanks!

Size in the back is same as front. 245/50/16 are available and fit fine

Hmm ... Why does my rear tires look wider than the front ones then? I got to go have a look maybe I'm mistaken

You could have 8 1/2 " rims on the front with 245/50/16 and 9 1/2 " rims on the rear with 255/50/16.

Thank you... Yeah I was thinking I need to go check that out first thing in the morning because I really need tires bad and don't feel safe driving her on the highway at the moment.

My 86 is a z51 car so it has the wider wheels..I bought toyo proxies r888s in the factory size as I won't be driving in the rain and what to hit a few autox events this summer. Pricing wasn't bad as I got them for $140 each.

Funny you should post this I was researching earlier the local tire shops and did see these in stock and they would be an exact fit replacement wise but I didn't see any details on the weird tread pattern. Have you driven on them at highway speeds yet?

Nope..it dont see why they would be an issue. Prob sketchy in the wet and might wear fast.

Well then yes I must check that in the morning. It's the way they came when I purchased the car back in the fall so just trying to get it road ready and safe to drive.

It's hard to tell from this perspective but the rear tires are definitely wider than the fronts yet the wheels look identical.

You are correct that a staggered setup I don't believe was stock, Z51 equipped cars came with 9 1/2" rims all corners and a standard setup was 8 1/2" all four corners as well all verts came with 9 1/2" all four. I do have an original sales brochure and when I get back home Tuesday ,I will see what tires sizes came with 8 1/2' rims. I know the Z51 with rim and tire size is correct though .

OP... If you check your RPO sticker which should be either under the arm rest door of your centre consul or in the right storage bin, this will tell you all the options your car came with. Look to see if Z51 is listed.

Side note, the 1984 Z51 did have the staggered setup from the factory...8-1/2" or 9-1-2", didn't matter all rims got the 255/50/R16's....another interesting note, some NON Z51 '84s came with the staggered width wheels from the factory, not sure why....in doing research I've read that some '84s ended up having the build sheet from either car ahead or behind it on the production line....upon removing my build sheet, this was exactly the case for mine....very similar options, color, etc....but it was a Z51 car, mine is not....BUT, my car has had the staggered wheels from day one! Perhaps the build sheet mixup explains the wheels or maybe it was a supply issue, where they were short on 8-1/2" LH & RHs and used 9-1/2"s on the rear instead, since they actually produced more Z51 suspensions than Base suspensions in 1984. I know that the '86 Z51 is the topic, just wanted to point out that the staggered setup was indeed a factory installed option for 1 year! The 245s will work on the 8-1/2"s, but not so much on the 9-1/2"s....255s work on both and came stock on ALL 16" rims👍

In December 2022 I managed to find a set of 4 BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 255/50ZR16. A friend of mine who works for a dealership called his source for tires and they had them. It might take a contact or tow to find original size.

Well for your sticker you do have a Z51 option which I think is better. Also so amazing that you car was on the production line 6 cars behind mine (25877), which means you also have aluminum heads.

Last 5 digits of your VIN which is shown on the top of the RPO label you attached. You are not that much younger than I am either (57). LOL

If you want to look at more of what your car has check the site I listed.

http://www.vettefacts.com/C4/1986.aspx

I used to have a couple others opened in tabs but don't right now.

Well I did check an original sales brochure and whether the car was delivered with standard 8 1/2" rims or upgraded 9 1/2" they came with 255/50/16 tires.
