I'm dead in the water with a tiny crack in my radiator. So to fulfil my Corvette fix today I went over to Pommy Paul's and helped him trouble shoot his headlight vacuum system.
In case anyone is interested. His vacuum check valve is shot. His vacuum canister is fine. Both relays check out OK. Not perfect vacuum hold. But good enough to function. Me, I'd rebuild them but they'll work. The blown seal on his RH headlight actuator was the big problem.
Just looking things over, found his manual choke, (I know, really!) Wasn't fully opening. Tryed readjusting the cable. But no joy. Cable just bounces back when pushing it in. So, we wired it fully open. He says henever uses it anyway. I figured having it hanging half closed at all times wasn't helping.
So, I helped out a Mate. He's got a driver quality 81 with a replacement distributor and Holley DP carb on a Edlebrock performer intake by the way.

Met some friends at the Lancaster Kimballs car show. Still run by a bunch of idiots. My buddy parks right at the entrance, saved me a spot. I pull up and the guy at the gate says the lots full. My buddy points at the spot and says my spot is open. He just stares at my buddy like a deer looking at the wrong end of a rifle. He looks at the other parking guy. Guy and he come over and says the lots full. I tell him my spots open and he just looks like a moron. I pull in and around them and start parking when the head moron pulls up on the gator and says the lots full . I start backing into my spot and he just stares at everyone....little bit of drool coming out because he was a mouth breather too. I get out of my car and there's another spot directly across from me open. I point it out to my buddy and he shakes his head.
About 5 minutes later a 57 chevy pulls up, "lots full" duhhhhhh. 5 guys in the cars next to me start pointing and telling dumb *** at the gate there's a spot fifteen feet behind him.....57 backs into that spot.
I need another show for fridays. There's always Target, Epping New England Dragway or cruising the beach. I think Kimballs is done.
Atleast for me....morons

Me: OK
These are dead:
Question: When new tie rod ends and ball joints arrive do I need to grease them or they come pregreased?

I'm hoping to wrap up the door glass adjustment and reinstall the newly dyed door panel. Lots of wrinkles from being folded on the pegboard for a month+.........
I have a 50 lb. bucket sitting on the panel to arch it so that it sits flush around the edges of the door

Corvette work for the past Month and a half
In the past Month, I've
1) Finished Porting and CC'ed the heads to 187cc's
2) Finished assembling the a new 350 Roller Cam/Roller Rocker 350. ~11.5:1 Compression with 0.015" Head Gaskets
2) Aligned the Bellhousing for the Tremec TKX 5-Speed Trans
3) Installed Clutch + Bellhousing
4) Removed Fuel Tank + Fuel Lines
5) Painted various parts with oxide converting coatings to maintain OEM parts
Up next is new EFI Fuel Tank from Tanks, Inc + 3/8" Fuel lines then new Borgeson Power Steering to remove Pitman Arm + Ram.
Ported and Polished Heads to 187cc's
Sealed Studs in to Block
Clean up excess Sealant
Heads Installed + Correct Length Push Rods (7.850"), Lash Set to 0.006"
Just Looks nice!
Final Runout 6 O-Clock
3 O-Clock
12 O-Clock
9 O-Clock
Clutch and Pressure Plate Installed
Bellhousing painted and installed. (Yes, Flat Black becuase it's gonna get dirty anyway)
Throughout bearing and Clutch Arm

Are you going to get the readings closer ?
Safety Car
There are several header manufacturers who recommend not using header flange gaskets and instead recommend Permatex hi temp gasket sealant between the head and header flange.
What if you apply a bead of it around the mating surfaces, let it set up over night and reassemble it?
I would think the heat is much lower at the collector and it should seal up those leaks.
I would also check the end of the collector pipe and the reducer to make sure both are nice and round.
One could have gotten slightly flattened during shipping or installation and now the two mating surfaces aren’t perfectly round.

So, still dead in the water over a tiny crack in my radiator. Went to the Car's and coffee event today on my Harley, actually it usually gets a fair amount of attention.
I got cornered once again my a club member named Wazza. Wazza has a 82 that has been converted over to a Holley carb and older style HEI. Over the last several months he has been plagued by a fuel smell in his car. He's been going nuts chasing everything from the charcoal canister to every line, hose etc. And he can't fix the fuel smell. So, he is once again telling me everything he has done and nothing is fixing the issue and he can't find any leaks anywhere.
I said, sounds basic. But have you checked your float level? How do you do that? Says old Wazza. So, off with the airfilter. See these glass sights. See these screws on top.......
Just got a call from him. He took it on a real good test drive on hilly, winding roads. Fuel smell is fixed.
Yes his levels were high.

I'll double check the manufacturers instructions in the morning...
It was 14thou off to start with so this is a definite improvement. Usually im a perfectionist but after like 20 iterations I just let it be at .005".

I think I found a 5 thousandth max as well but being at the max isn't always going to work. I had to mix dowels to get mine correct. I used a 14 and a 21 to get it down to 2 thou and it did take a while.
Racer
Had the speakers spliced in, helped run a shooting match on Sat. So this AM I get up and figure I can get all the power spliced in and get everything buttoned up. Check the old power leads, no juice, check them at the fuse block, no juice, check the fuse block, no juice in the car, put a battery maintainer on, shows fault, turn the battery cut off sw to off, shows no fault.
I left for a day and now have no power to anything in the car.
So begins the next mystery...
Looks like the ammeter isnt fused... going to start there..

Sounds like something drained your battery completely dead, hence the fault code...charge it fully and start over

I'll pull the clutch apart and give the 0.021" a try.
Per the manufacturer TIR = (min-max)/2 with a tolerance of 0.005". The only thing i'm unclear about is the tolerance on TIR or just min-max? Because a few of you raised a concern, I will attempt to dial in better.
